I have done the searches and found several answers and more questions....lol...anyway, I have a 99 JGC limited...I6 engine, auto, 2 wheel drive....starts fine, idles fine...no noises....put into gear, still fine....once you start rolling the whining starts..its a hummmmm...whine.....whatever you want to call it, its definately not grinding...metal on metal or anything like that...is this normal at all??? some tell me no, some tell me "oh yeah, thats just a Jeep" anyway, everything works fine, drives fine, all fluids are at proper level and such, just wondering, what is the consensus...thanks in advance!!!

Well, I'm still a newbie but my '98 GC once had those exact characteristics that you described, my local dealer said it was my rear differential. I let them repair it & it fixed my hummmm noise.

Expensive though!

yes, it is just when you are driving down the road, but I dont think its tires, its more distinctive whining than road noise from tires....I really think its the rear end....I had someone look at it, without taking it apart, and he said the gears are probably just a little out or alignment....making it whine!!!

Now that I have listen for it I think your right.. But mine stops the faster I go.. Its not loud at low or higher speeds.. about 50 - 60 I notice it the most.
