My Lincoln Tranny all out of wack

One day at work my 94' Lincloln Town Car's (sig series) transmission acts loose and the transmission shift bar is very loose and hard to adjust. I pop the hood and I see that the coolant container has lost its cap and there is no fluid inside (apparently the car overheated and the cap popped off). Then I see that a hose is loose, and most likely the reason why the car is acting suspicious. I replaced the hose but now the car won't start and I don't know. Having limited funds, I employ a local neighborhood mechanic to checkout my car and he tells me there is a switch underneath the car to reset the transmission. I've never heard of this. Sounds odd to me. Now my car won't start. I need help!

I'm guessing the "trans.. shift bar" you refer to is the steering post lever? And the reference to "...hard to adjust" is meaning it's difficult to shift from "P" to any other position, etc.

Still guessing, you mention "won't start", and assuming the above re: the lever, it sounds like the Steering Column has come apart on the bottom side, and now the Key Lock Cylinder when turned won't engage the Ignition Switch, located on the bottom side of the steering column.

This condition has varying symptoms depending on how far the Ignition Switch has moved from the Key Lock Cylinder. There's a long bar that goes from the Key Lock Cylinder to the Ignition Switch, when the Ign. Key Cylinder is rotated, the bar travels toward the Ign. Switch and operates the different functions of the switch. As the Steering Column bottom assembly loosens, the different functions are lost, and eventually rendered inoperative alltogether.

Of course, if my assumptions interpreting your post are incorrect, this whole response is just a review of another possibility.
