Ran out of gas and now Lumina won't start :(

I was very low on gas as I approached the gas station in my 94 Lumina. Just as I pulled up to the pump I ran out of gas and the car stalled out - but I was close enough to the pump that I could coast to it.
I filled the gas tank almost all the way, but when I went to start it I could not do it. I tried to the point that I drained my battery. I got a jump and could still not get it going. I even let it sit overnight, but when I returned still no luck. I tried spraying starter fluid in the air filter intake, it started up but would not remain running - it did not sound like any fuel was making it to the engine. I don't know what to do.
Is it possible that gunk was settled to the bottom of the tank and when I ran out of gas it sucked it into the lines/filter/injectors?
Any suggestions would really help me out - as I do not want to tow it to a garage. I am not all that mechanically inclined - I can do basic things but do not have the means to do anything like drop the tank or anything like that.
Thanks!!

Jason

What my guess would be is that the fuel pump burned out while trying to suck nothing from an empty gas tank after it used the last drop. I hate to say it, but you're probably going to have to drop the tank and replace that sucker. It's possible some crap could have gotten stuck, but I really doubt it. But BEFORE you try it check for fuel pressure, just to make sure it's not getting any fuel so you don't waste any time, but it's a pretty good bet you need a fuel pump. It happens a lot when people run out of gas.

I second Dwalmop. Probably burned up the pump, but check for pressure first to avoid using up a good $300. If no pressure, you could always change the fuel filter (it wouldn't hurt, but it may not help).

Good chance the pump is bad, but you could pull the line from tank to filter, and turn the ignition on momentarily to see if the pump is alive (make sure you catch the fuel in something, if it is working, there will be a lot!) If you get good flow this way, the filter is probably hogged up. If not, check your fuses first, but chances are the pump is smoked.

The fuel pump uses fuel flow for self-cooling, and if allowed to run even a short time while starved, it can overheat and self-destruct.

Smack the bottom of the tank a few times with a rubber mallot and try it. Sometimes that will free up a stuck feul pump. You'll end up having to replace it eventually, but that might at least get you to a shop or home if your gonna do it yourself.

The same thing happens to my 92 Lumina, and i had to do any kind of stuff, so like everyone said, maybe is a pain on the neck, but i go for the pump... Good luck gettin' the tank down.
