2000 4x4 Grind/Whine Front End

I have a 2000 Blazer 4x4. It has had a cycling vibration at about 120km/h for quite some time, but it disappeared with the colder weather last week. I headed up north today and after extended highway speeds, I noticed a loud high pitched whining from the front end as the truck decelerated from 100km/h. The only way I could stop the noise was by engaging 4HI. Once I switched back to 2HI the problem was gone for about 10 minutes and then it would come back after continued highway driving. This happened about 7 times over a 200km drive. When I slowed to almost a stop the sound was like a loud groan with a ratcheting noise, but again could be stopped by engaging 4HI. By the ratching/clicking noise at low speeds I'm sure there is now some damage to the axle teeth which will be confirmed when I dump the diff fluid. Anyone experienced this? I had the diff replaced at 27,000km's and I'm now at 86,000km's.

Check you differential and transfer case fluids.

Sounds like your differential is going bad again.
You say you had it changed once before, was it a dealer install or a used diff installed by a local shop? Not that it really matters provided the mechanic doing the work checks the rear differential for compatability. I've seen many diffs go bad on 4x4's due to mis-matched gear RATIOS .
If you don't match them correctly you will have premature failure or a quick failure for severely incompatible ratios.
The first thing that you should check is the tag on diffs and the transfer case to see if they work together or you will have more failures.

This may not be the case with your vehicle, just something I've seen a few times and may be worth a look.

Whenever I change front/ rear diffs, or a transfer case, the ratio is the first thing I look at. Very close ratios will work, there is a very small margin of error though. Unless you are the original owner you may not know if a diff/case was changed, especially if the tags are gone.

You can find the factory ratio info on the door jamb plaque if you want to know what should be there.

That or he is low on differential fluid.

Fluids are good. They get checked every oil change and changed on schedule or before. Something definitely has let go again in the front diff. The truck is being towed to the dealer in the morning.

Just to post an update. The front end was taken apart and the gears are chewed and the shaft is a mess. About $2000 Canadian in parts and labour. Extended warranty company is refusing to cover the damage as they claim it was caused by the cable that comes from the actuator. They claim the cable is rusted. The dealer has pulled the cable and has found that it is not seized or binding and the only rust on it is surface discolouration at the crimp under the rubber boot. Extended warranty company is now claiming it is stretched. WTF? Anyone wanting advice on extended warranties....pay the extra and stick with the GM extended warranty. I have an Ultimate Autoshield warranty and every claim so far has been an adventure and I have been without a vehicle for a week as it sits on the hoist in pieces.
