Low Coolant Light On

I have a '96 Lumina and the low coolant light is on most of the time even though my coolant level is full! It has been coming on for months and I have just been ignoring it, occasionally checking the coolant level which is always full. Now, occasionally my fan continues to run for a little while after I turn the car off. All this time my temperature has never even reached the half way point much less became hot. Help

2 things: 1) Check wires for low coolant sensor on radiator 2) Check to make sure there is no air in coolant system by bleeding it.

also check for oil in the cooling system. The 95-up 3.1's are known for intake leaks, and one of the first signs of trouble is a low coolant light that stays on, caused by oil sludging up the sensor.

If the radiator is full of coolant or water, don't look further, it's the low coolant sensor. It's funny how those sensors (all in general) are so weak, they can't even do their work, to tell us something is wrong with the car. In this case, the low coolant sensor is weaker than the radiator itself! :screwy:

although this is an old post I just want to let people know that on my car it seems the previous owner used some stop leak in there and it clogged up the sensor which was on the upper right side of my 92 lumina.

It just has a metal pin which comes off then the sensor is pulled out be careful because antifreeze will come out in the process.

then just remove the sensor and if it has anything clean it out I cleaned mine out with a toothpick.

then I reinstalled mine and filled it with antifreeze and No more light.

hope this helps someone.
