After I stop at a stop light, the gas pedal is very hard to depress. It is worse when you let the car coast down a long hill before pressing on the gas pedal. The pedal presses down easily when the engine is off.

I have the same problem with my '89 Camry. I think it is because of the throttle body tension. I don't know for sure. I've gotton used to it. It seems like when I'm going up a hill it gets real hard to press (sometimes if it is given too much of a push, the engine with slam the tranny into a much lower gear than needed). Does anyone else know anything about this?

I have a 90 Camry that did the same thing. What you need to do is remove the intake snorkle and clean the mouth of the throttle body. This cured mine. Soak a rag in solvent and open the butterfly and clean all around. My pedal would feel like it was "stuck" after waiting for a stoplight, you almost had to stomp it.

I cleaned throttlebody valve as suggested in post #3. It fixed my problem. Thanks for the info.
