Could someone give us some real specifics on how to disconnect this to try and get the car home(about 40 miles), we want to be sure and disconnect the right thing. Thanks

The torque converter locks up when it's in high gear at a constant speed. So it's like a 1:1 ratio. The trans moves as the same speed as the motor. If it wasn't to lock then you fry the transmission and be really up a creek with out a paddle!

Drive home in reverse! It might be fun. I had an old beemer and had a similar problem. I drove about 5 miles backwards (with an escort) to the repair shop. I wouldn't do it if you have to go on any larger streets though. It is potentially dangerous. I did get a lot of strange looks. I also happened to drive past a police officer. . . he looked twice and kept going. Don't know for sure, but probably it is illegal.

Well, that was a fun idea anyway, but about 50 miles of highway sounds a little scary. I ended up having it towed, got a good deal and its now at the mechanics, so waiting for the next chapter or the shoe to fall so to speak.
