I bought a used 2001 Camry last month. It came with just two keys, no remotes. So I got on ebay and bought one wth programming instructions.
Since then I have tried two different programming instructions ad none of them could put the car in programming mode.

So I doubted that my car did not have a remote keyless entry system. There is no red light on the lower left side of the steering wheel. Does that mean for sure that it doesn't have RKE system installed?
I took it to dealer to ask him if it had RKE system. He confidently says he can program the remote for $95+Tax. So he seems to say it has a RKE system.

Did the 2001 cars come with RKE installed by default? Is there anyway the RKE system could be disabled, fuse, etc. and I would need to enable that?

I haven't yet tried the programming where you open the side mirror adjust switch and jump wires on back of that but I think that is for much older Camry's, or is it?

Thanks.

Here's the procedure...
1. Driver door open and unlocked. Key out of the ignition
2. Insert the key and remove.
3. Cycle the power locks 5 times in 40 sec (5 lock, 5 unlock).
4. Close and open driver door.
5. Cycle the power locks 5 times in 40 sec (5 lock, 5 unlock).
6. Insert the key and turn it from OFF to ON twice and remove it again from ignition.
7. Power lock will cycle to confirm (start over if nothing happens)
8. press “lock” and “unlock” buttons of the FOB at the same time for 1 to 1.5 seconds.
9. Immediately press “Lock” button for more than 2 sec and release.
10. If it’s correct, the power door lock will cycle once. If it’s wrong the door locks will cycle twice or not at all.
11. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 for each transmitter, including old ones.
12. Close driver door.

Tried that. Don't work. Confusing. I guess the dealer will realize this when he tries to program it.

I just use key to open it manually. Someday I'll go to dealer, since he says he can program it, and let him do it. But before he starts I'll make it clear to him that I won't pay if he can't program.
If you have some updates let me know.
