1998 Venture Starts/Stalls/Starts/Runs fine

My 1998 Venture will start fine. Run about 5 seconds and stall. It will then start and run fine. It does this 99% of the time. Sometime if you shut off and restart withing about 10 minutes it will stay running. Acts as though it is running out of gas or loosing power to fuel pump. I don't get why it runs fine after it is started second time. Changed fuel filter but same thing. Checked plug under sliding door, looks good and clean. Occasionally when it is damp it will start and stay running?? No fault codes. I'm inclined to think o2 sensor but wouldn't I see other symptoms? Also o2 was Sensor replaced about a year ago.

I would look into changing the oil pressure sending unit. The first time you start it, the ecm isn't getting a signal from the oil sender that there is oil pressure, and it shuts the engine off.

Good idea but I replaced sender and same thing. Noticed a couple other clues. If I turn ignition key on and wait 5 seconds before starting it will start and run fine everytime. Another thing has happened twice now that may or may not be related, once while taking off from a stop light and once while driving at about 55 attempting to pass someone, when I accellerated it jerked as if the engine stalled for a split second then everything was OK. Both time this happened several seconds after trany had shifted so I do not feel its a trany problem.

Do you have an anti-theft system? It may not be responding fast enough, thus cutting off the fuel supply to the engine until it responds. That would explain why if you leave the key in for 5 seconds it will start and stay running every time. Another thing to check is fuel pressure. Check a haynes or chilton's manual to find the correct pressure. Your fuel pump may not be delivering fuel to the engine fast enough. Does it run perfect other than the stalls?

I agree, I'd suspect fuel pressure or fuel pump. When you turn the key to On but don't start, you should hear the fuel pump hum for a second or two while it pressureizes the fuel system. If the system is not reaching the correct pressure, you may have a faulty pump or pressure regulator, though I think the pressure regulator would throw a code.

I just join forum and see you problem what I already have before on my van.I really hope that will help you because I spend over $700 backs(changing fuel pump) before find problem. So:
Check for connectors under car on driver side(appr.near side pass. door if you have 5 door config.)Ther two (my version van) connectors. One of them going to fuel tank.Disconnect and look for any damages(bent, cracks, etc.)of connectors and pins.
My problem was: female connector for cable going to fuel pump was not connecting properly(one of female connector contain little metal part ,playing role of spring when connecting, was bent)
I was loosing connection ,I guess, when I crank engine but mostly from vibration made connection and starts car and then if car works really good and smooth I loosing that connection .Lately I find that was fuel pump power wire.Any way check both connectors, since you in that area.
Good luck and I will be very happy if that information help to you.

My issue sounded the same up until the hesitation while accelerating. Once mine is started, there is no shortage of fuel. I can put it to the mat and it accelerates wonderfully and without any hesitation.

My issue seems to be only at time of starting and the wait-five-seconds trick didn't seem to make a difference. At first it would start on the second or third try and not act up again for days. Today it happened twice; the second time it finally started after trying dozens of times over a period of hours.

I did notice that the "Pass Key" light stayed on while driving today so I'm wondering if it might be the "Pass Key Module" I saw mentioned in other posts.

Where does one find the Pass Key Module?
Is it easy to change?
Is it expensive?

Thanks,

Ed

Did you check your fuel filter? I know others on this post said they did. But to me it sounds like you are having a fuel issue because once the pressure is built up enough, it can push through all the crap in the filter. Also get your battery system tested (full), could be part of it.

if you have had the battery unhooked a couple of days then re-program it the owners manual will walk you through the steps. also it could be the fuelpump going out just because you can hear the pump running does not mean it is pumping the 45 to 50 pounds of fuel pressure needed to makle the engine run right. the fuel pressure regulator might be bad, pull the vacumn hose off the side of it and see if gas comes out the vacumn hose hole.the last time i put intake gaskets in mine i unhooked the battery and when i got it back together and started it up it ran for 5 seconds and shut off and the pass-key light was on and the door locks were not working the key bob would not lock or unlock the doors. re-progammed it and everything went back to normal as expected on these vans.but if you have around 80,000 miles on the fuelpump then i would put a fuelpump in cause it will leave you on the side of the road..let us know what you find....

when my fuel pump decided to start going out it first the gas gauge went nuts. had a full tank and we are going down the fourlane at 75 and the gauge drops to empty then after ten minutes it went back to full. then a week later i got 1/2 tank of gas and getting back on the fourlane and went to speed up to merge in and had no get up and go .then it only wanted to run 50 mph. we start home later that day and the van started bucking and jerking. would only run 30 mph then it would run 90 mph. then back to bucking and 30mph every once in a while it would backfire.traced the fuelpump wires to the pass-thu connector below driverside sliding door and it was corroded replaced the connector. and finally had to pressure test the pump and it would fluctuate from 5 lbs to 45 lbs and its supposed to hold 50 lbs all the time.and the backfiring will crack the intake gaskets.
