Coolant Temperature

I need a little help .. bought a 96 Deville a couple of weeks ago off ebay and drove it back home to SC from PA with no problem. I took the car to Atlanta and it ran hot after getting almost home. I replaced the thermostat and that has helped. However, being a novice with the Caddy I was unsure of something. It seems that when I picked the car up, the computer indicated the coolant temperature was at 177 degrees as I was riding on the interstate. However after running hot and replacing the thermostat, it seems to run between 194 and 201 now. At imes it has run up to 228, but gradually comes back down.

Does anyone know what the operative coolant temperature should be on this car (96 Deville Northstar) for highway driving and/or city driving? Could I need to fush and replenish with new coolant (just added water when it ran hot).

Is there a coolant temperature that should cause me great concern?

Thanks for any help!

Keith

M 96 and 97 had overheating problems. I replaced the water pump on my 1996 that fixed the problem. It was getting up to 250 the car would automatically shutdown. I replace some hose or something like that that was clogging the antifreeze from cooling the engine. Its still gets up to 222, the dealership said thats normal. Just make sure its not leaking.

Thanks! I was getting very nervous .... I too was thinking of having the water pumped changed just to be safe. Any idea of how much $$$ I can look forward to paying to have the water pumped changed?

Seems to me the old thermostat must have been a 180 and the new one is 195 degree.
