Here is my problem. My wife came home the other night, having her '98 towed home. She told me that it wouldn't start. Well, I tried to turn it over and I didn'tget nothing. It was like the key wasn't turning far enough to start. so I thought it was the "ignition switch". I had took it out, replaced it, and it did the same. So i took it out again and turnd the switch with a screwdriver and it finally started but only started. It would die about 2 seconds later. Could it be the lock or could it be the "theft system". I hope you can help.

Does the 98 have passlock?

Ok, I answered my own question, yes it has passlock, wasn't sure what year it was introduced on the grand am. You say you turned the ignition switch with a screwdriver? That will explain why it started then died right away. The passlock cylinder has a hall effect sensor in it which detects the key turning. If the system does not detect this along with the ignition switch it will trip the anti theft system. Sounds to me like a faulty ignition lock cylinder or a worn out or poorly cut key.

Well, at least I wasn't too far off. Now, do I have to reset that or anything when I replace it?

If you are replacing the lock cylinder you may have to have the cars computer reprogrammed to read the code from the new cylinder. When you do replace the cylinder, I would first try disconnecting the battery of the car for approx. 15min. Then hook the battery back up and try to start the engine with the new ignition lock cylinder. This may be sufficient.

P.S. The passlock system learns the locks code when the vehicle is started for the very first time at the manufacturing plant. That's why you may be able to get away with the battery trick. Let me know how you make out. I'd like to know if that's all it takes.

Thanks for the advice. I will let you know what happens. I have to wait until this weekend to do this all. Again...thanks
