91 tracker starting problem

we just bought a 91 tracker and it ran great the 1st day, then it just quit running. After reading and searching, the suspect is the ECM is bad. Plenty of spark and fuel. Found the "quick fix" to get it to run and tried it. Tap into the coil with a 14gauge wire and connect it to the injector wire. That worked great for exactly 1 week. we bought it to just use around our property. I drove it down the road with no problems, but then after i got back in it a few hours later, it would not start.
BUT..... spray ether into it and it will start and run on its own. also there are clicking relays under the dash and on the engine. Is there something else now, maybe a pressure switch? or is the ECM so bad now, it needs replaced.
Any input would greatly be appreciated.

The exact same thing has happened with my 91 Sidekick. Did the ECM fix but now it wont start at all now. NO Spark. I have replaced the coil and igniter and it stil wont start. Would you have an ECU for mine? Its an auto # 33920-56b4

I have noticed no one has said if replacing the ECM was the problem. I have a 90 with the same problem not starting and no fire on plugs. I think the ECM is located above the fuse panel. I have found something with the # 33620-90v35.

YES, We bought a used one from ebay and took a chance that it would solve the problem, and yes, it did solve our problem, we had check engine light and brake light on. After replacing the ECM, it runs great and no lights on when running!
We found one on ebay for $40.00 .

donz--thanks for the reply. Since I have no fire on plugs leads me to think it could be either 1. Coil or 2. Electrinic Ignition. After reading other posts I am kind of stumped as to which way to go. Thanks any suggestions?

All you can do is narrow it down. Coil is easy to replace. Check your rotor cap and rotor button. Then maybe the electronic ignition. Did you try the ECM fix and see if that helped? Mostly what I read is that the ECM on this vehicle has a bad Track record. Ours started if we spray starting fluid in the airbox. We had good spark and fuel pressure. Just wouldn't pulse the injector. Lead to the ECM.

DID it just start having this problem?

We have been replacing this and that one a 1991 Tracker and I have it at a different mechanic and he said the computer is bad too. The ether trick works if it's warm out and we had the same clicking sound forma relay.

How much are new computers?

I am in the process of looking for a ECM. I understand that it has to be replaced with the same #s and you have to change a chip on the inside. I have also noticed on E-Bay a place in NJ that will redo them for fifty some dollars. Might try them if I can't find right one. Thanks for the replys.

Our 1991 Tracker is now running thanks to a rebuilt ECM (with a lifetime warranty) from a shop in Texas. $383 though.

I have a 1990 Geo Tracker 4x4 with auto trans that is not getting power to the fuel pump. The haynes manual(puke) says that there is a fuse for the fuel pump. I have not found any marked F1 as they suggest. I have tested the relays and still no power to the fuel pump. Does anybody have an idea as to what might be going on? I have talked to several mechanics and they say that from what I've checked, if I checked everything right, then I should have covered everything. However, I am still not getting any voltage back to the fuel pump. What brought all this on is the negative post on the battery was dirty (on my to-do list). Well, the wife went out to start the car and it would just "click". I cleaned the post and tried to star the car. It will not start. If I spray gas into the TBI, it'll run until it burns all the gas I sprayed in there. Also, I am getting power to the injector, but I am not 100% sure about the fuel relays. Somebody mentioned that if I am getting power to the injectors, then I should be getting it to the fuel relay (I guess they are on the same circuit internally). I need to find a cheap fix to this, as I am unemployed, and my wife just came off a 1 month lay-off. Needless to say, I don't have big bucks to do the trial and error testing. If anybody has an idea, please let me know.

Thanks!

Thanks! :smokin: First take left rear taillight out and check wires that go to fuel pump. Clean then and see if your fuel pump is working. If still not getting any juice then go to fuse panel and listen for the relays to kick in when you turn ignition on, if you don't hear anything then the relays can be bad. They are located above the fuse panel. I have a extra set and will send pics when I get back in Sat. Just send e-address

Thanks! I didn't know that the wires went thru the taillight. I will check that out and let you know.
You can email me at glendor2@earthlink.net.

I am busy today, but I will check that out tomorrow.
This thing is really starting to tick me off. BTW, the relays click, and according to the Haynes manual(puke), they test OK.
Do you by chance know the location of the main relay? Is it in the ECM? I have looked and other than some relays under the hood, that I later identified, I can't seem to find it.

Thanks!

here is some answers the ecm causes the fuel problem and the main control for 12 volts goes through the ecm the new ones run from 500 up to 1500 for a auto 2wd and there is 15 differenr motors and computers and it can be a nightmare make sure if you change yours the numbers they're 4 sets the 2 10 digit # match exactly or it will kick the light on and if it is a 95 or older the reset is under the drivers side speaker if it is 96 and newer it is just unhook batt and turn heeadlights on for 10 min and 1 more answer the chip does not have to be changed or reprogramed just make sure the # match any questions email me at bigd7315@yahoo.com
