Bug rebuild! Where to pick up parts! jdrumstik 10-27-2004, 04:43 PM
hey everybody. I'm right now shopping for a bug to restore. And i have to ask where you all get your parts and a few other questions. First of all, how cheaply can you rebuild a VW engine pre 75'? And how cheaply can you do it with , not high performance but decent parts? Also, assuming that I really don't have any professional tools like a welder or anything is it possible to Mount 1641 chambers on a 1300 or 1200 engine? Or is that limited to the 1600s? Also, what do you guys do about carbs. Cause in my research it seems that the carbs are the most expensive thing to it. And Duals is a plus but I suppose if I'm on a budget build I could go single. I also want to do this cheaply since I plan to sell it within a year of finishing if to start on a Big Block Chevy rebuild in our community colleges Machine shop. So i was wondering what kind of resell I might be able to get out to this. I know this is a lot for question for one thread. but i am searching and it would be chill if I could do this. Also if I'm rebuilding the engine should i stay away from bugs that arn't running or would that stuff be easy to fix after a rebuild? 68vert 10-30-2004, 11:04 PM Go to www.airspeedparts.com they are great guys and very knowledgeable jdrumstik 11-03-2004, 10:53 AM thanks, but, they really don't have very many parts. All they really have is oil pans and a few suspension kits. Any other stores? BoatCop 11-06-2004, 06:04 PM For the best parts and a dealer who'll stand behind what he sells, use Aircooled.net (http://www.aircooled.net). May seem a little pricey, but I guarantee you'll only have to buy it once. Not over and over again like the cheapie parts places. Tell John I sent you. 66fasty 11-20-2004, 05:50 PM My dad has a store called Air-Cooled Connection. We are a distributor for TMI,West Coast Metric,SCAT,Bugpack, and IMC which only carries stock parts. You can install 85.5 p&c on a 1200 but they have to be shortened.I think your best bet wouldbe to find a 1600 and work up from there as they are a much stronger engine stock(crank)and have more power to start with.E-mail us at aircooledconnection@dc.rr.com barretire 11-23-2004, 11:46 AM hey everybody. I reccomend a long block try Mofoco 66fasty 11-23-2004, 04:44 PM I think before you decide to go with MOFOCO, go to TheSamba.com and go to the forum section and search Mofoco and see how many happy customers they have!Because I think there is only one or two lucky ones. FlawedByNature 11-27-2004, 03:43 PM Hey, about cheap parts... I just posted my own thread just a minute ago without first reading yours. Its entitled "LISTEN UP," and i think you should take a look at it to see what im offering. As a quick overview, ive got pretty much every part for every square inch of my '70. Including a Weber Carb if youre interested. And like i stated in my thread, im only 17 and am too busy to invest a lot of time into finding actual value for all these parts. So if youre interested, now is the time to cheat me out of some nice parts cuz i dont know what theyre worth. lol 73btl 01-18-2008, 08:33 PM I like to get my parts from CIP1.ca. I find it to be cheap and all sorts of parts. CENA 02-02-2008, 09:40 PM www.midamericamotorworks.com (http://www.midamericamotorworks.com) is another good place for beetle parts. You can also have a free catalog sent to you I believe. **electric blue*** 02-03-2008, 12:58 AM if any thing you should just look at wolfburg west they have everything :) bugman742002 02-20-2008, 06:52 PM go to www.shoptalkfourms.com (http://www.shoptalkfourms.com) this site deals with a/c vw only there is alot of good info there. they can help you with any questions you have. the 1641 jugs will fit the 1500 and the 1600 case. the 1200 will neeed to be machined. i'm not very sure about the 1300 though.
