:banghead:
i have a 98 grand prix gt and i think the rack & pinion is going out.
the steering always feels loose and so far i've had a broken sway bar fixed, i had a bolt missing from the subframe, and no matter what they fix, it feels worse. any suggestions?

other than feeling loose, do you have any noises while turning or a "rumbling" feeling in the steering wheel? Normally a bad rack will exhibit one or both of these symptoms. IF not, check for bad hub bearings and/or ball joints, as they will give you a loose steering feel as well.

yes, when i turn hard either direction it makes a terrible sound like i just turned it too far. and sometimes it sounds like its grinding or dragging something on the ground. when i first got the car, it was doing something similar and i had the wheel bearing checked but they said there was nothing wrong. when i hit bumps it feels more like 10 bumps and the whole car separates from the frame.
i've found a missing bolt from the subframe and a broken swaybar, fixed them, and it feels worse.

Actually, my steering also feels a bit loose. The problem doesn't affect me driving too much, I've grown used to it. I checked and found out there is a recall on the rack and pinnion. Take a look into it.

bcampbell, hi, I'm new here. Where do you find out about the recalls? I have a 1998 Grand Prix and a 2000 Bonneville. Thanks.

ok, I took it in for the recall and they said it's already been done over a year ago. they didn't even pull it into the shop.
