Questions about my new Tacoma TRD..Boo_daddy 10-17-2004, 05:09 AM Hey guys, I just bought a 01 TRD offroad tacoma. It has the TRD supercharger, all that good stuff. My qquestion is, The guy I bought it from said he had the TRD limited slip diff installed. Now, how do I find out he wasnt lying to me. Also, I dont have the electric locker on my tacoma lik every other TRD offroad has. Does toyota remove the electric locker when they install the TRD limited slip? Does the limited slip have a built in locker?? cause I noticed when I put the truck in 4wd hi or lo the back axles seemed like they are locked when trying to make a sharp turn (like the gravels sliding and pavement squeel). how can I tell what kind of diff this thing has on it. and would it be possible to install the electric locker on it with the limited slip? thanks! Brian R. 10-17-2004, 07:57 PM Jack up both the rear wheels with the truck in neutral. Rotate one of the wheels. If the rear end is a limited slip, the other wheel will rotate in the same direction as the wheel your rotating. If it rotates in the opposite direction, you have an open rear end. Limited slip differentials normally don't have lockers. That is their function by default. Boo_daddy 10-17-2004, 10:57 PM Thanks! I was just needing to know if this guy had told me a lie when he sold me the truck. I will jack it up tomorrow and see. I have looked on the diff housing and it doesnt even have the electronics on it for the locker, do you know if the TRD limited slip kit includes a new housing and all? I have noticed that when I have the truck on pavement and floor it, it leaves two nice little black marks instead of the usual one. and when the truck is in 4wd, and you try to turn it in gravel, you can hear the outside tires slipping in the gravel. Is there any way to tell if this truck really had the TRD offroad package? Brian R. 10-17-2004, 11:56 PM Since it leaves two tire marks, it has to be a limited slip. Don't know anything about the TRD package. Boo_daddy 10-18-2004, 12:13 AM So i assume the whenever toyota installs the LSD they prolly go ahead and remove the electric lockers, (cause I only have a blank where the switch goes) Brian R. 10-18-2004, 01:04 AM Probably, they serve the same purpose so it is unlikely they would leave them both connected. One might actually interfere with the other. OzarkTrailRunner 10-18-2004, 12:48 PM You can't use the TRD limited slip with the E-locker, it's one or the other. If you want the E-locker instead of the Limited slip it will have to be a housing out of a TRD, and as far as I know you don't get a new housing when you buy the LSD. To check if he really sold you a TRD or just has some sticksers and a lie a TRD comes with Bilstein shocks(Blue & Yellow) and the locker. If he simply removed the locker and replaced it with the LSD you would still have the TRD housing which will have the drain plug for your rear diff on the left side (looking from the rear) where not TRD rear diffs drain plugs are located on the right side. Hope this helps some. Boo_daddy 10-22-2004, 01:29 PM well, my fill plug on mt diff is on the right side (looking from the rear of the truck) and there is no mounting spots for anything like the electric locs use. So I assume that my diss is non-trd. Also, my shocks are just plain black. What are the differences between a TRD offroad and a non-TRD offroad tacoma? OzarkTrailRunner 10-22-2004, 04:49 PM I'm not sure what it consists of entirely. I know that they have the locker and Bilstein's, the front springs are progressive and the rear are different from non-TRD but I'm not sure how. i think that they're softer... Other than that I think that the rest of it is just a different trim package. If there is more someone please fill in the blanks. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
