why would a person convert to map? I met someone with a 600hp 280zx, and he converted the car to map.

The map, or manifold air pressure, sensor doesn't restrict airflow like the maf does. The reason is because the maf has an offshoot that air enters into to measure the overall volume of air entering, while the map measures the vacuum pressure inside the manifold. And at really high horsepower levels with a lot of air, even that much less restriction can add some gains.
