Starting Problemtycole 10-14-2004, 11:01 AM Jeep wont start on first try, but always on the second try. On the first attemp to start the jeep it just keeps on rolling over, but does sound like it is going to start. It is a 4.7 V8 Jeep Limited, 2002 Has only 70k on it, so could it still be the fuel pump? Thanks Tyler msrjeep 10-15-2004, 01:40 AM yes it could be, you can do a fuel pressure test.. do that first then go from there. Myrtle Beach 10-15-2004, 09:21 AM My first fuel pump went out at 60k, the next one at about 90K. These pumps are notorious for losing pressure when they sit. In case you didn't know the fuel pump is located inside the tank. The best way to check is do what Mrjeep said and see if it is holding pressure. Juan_milo 11-15-2004, 06:28 PM Hey, I have a 2001 with the same symptoms you have descibed. Was it the fuel pumo, or something else? Please reply as soon as you are able. dksob81 11-15-2004, 06:59 PM check to c if u have SPARK on the first attempt to start the jeep? I am assuming your not going to have SPARK on the first attempt - this sounds like a bad Camshaft Position Sensor (camshaft, not crankshaft). unbolt one of the coils and pull the coil off of the plug and hold it close to a bolt while u have someone attempt to start the jeep. remember u have to do this before u try and start the jeep for the first time. Juan_milo 11-16-2004, 01:01 PM Thanks for the feedback. I will try it! It does however sometimes start on the first go, and often nearly goes on the first attempt as well. It seems as though it does have some spark. Any other advise? check to c if u have SPARK on the first attempt to start the jeep? Just bought it so it was sitting also. Maybe it is the fuel pump. Anybody have any ideas? I am most certain there is spark. Thanks a_alyte 11-29-2004, 10:58 AM I've also experienced this when trying to start my jeep for the 1st time, usually after sitting through the night. Lately, when I try to start my jeep in the morning, I'll have to give it gas until it starts & continue giving it gas for about 30 seconds. After the 30 seconds or so the jeep will continue running on its own! bradorboy 11-29-2004, 11:05 AM I assume this is not normal. So what is the fix Jeep people???? New battery? :-) dksob81 11-29-2004, 11:55 AM a alyte, does thejeep start then stall immediately? if so replace the IAC Valve (Idle Air Control) I had this same problem in my 94 ZJ and I replaced the IAC and all is good now, altho my problem didn't happen everyday but about 60% of the time. but it hasn't done it. mine would start right up then die right away, I had to give it gas for about a minute or so after getting it started for it to run (Idle). a_alyte 11-29-2004, 12:21 PM Yes dksob81, my jeep usually starts then immediately stalls on the 1st try. However, on my 1st try it usually cranks & sounds like its going to turn, but doesn't! It usually starts on the 2nd try with out a problem, & performance is good when its running. Only recently has my 2nd attempt been failing. When the 2nd attempt fails, I then turn the key while giving it alittle gas & the jeep starts. If I immediately get off the gas it stalls, but if I stay on the gas lightly for a few seconds it stays on! I'll look into replacing my IAC Valve though, thanks. Thanks Tyler Try turning the key on and wait about 30 seconds, this will give the fuel pump time to prime fuel rail. On the stalling clean the air idle control valve, thats the slot inside the throttle bores dale jeepman600@aol.com :2cents: Also if camshaft position sensor was bad, jeep will not start at all. a_alyte 11-29-2004, 01:02 PM I'll try that when I start my jeep tomorrow Dale, thanks. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
