My mom's 2001 montana has a loud ringing/whining noise coming from the electric fuel pump. It's been doing it for a while. It runs fine, but that noise is annoying. Can we expect any problems from it, or is it just a nuisance.

You didn't say how many miles on the van. I would guess the pump is developing an internal problem and will probably go bad in the near future. The pump should run very quietly and the only time you should hear it is when the pump starts when the key initially turns on. If you have more than 100K miles you may want to replace it and not wait for it to go bad. It could last a long time but may go tomorrow. Good Luck! Sorry, I was off the board for about a week due to illness and didn't see you post.

Noisy pump for me ended up needing replacement...
I stopped by the dealer twice mentioning the "whine" I heard only a week after purchase which seemed to get progressively louder and all I got was "that's normal" from them. Finally a couple days later it started misfiring on acceleration from stop and the engine light came on. So I drove directly to the dealer and they hooked a up code reader and found a misfire on #1 cylinder. They replaced the fuel filter which didn’t fix the misfire so they finally decided it was caused by the faulty fuel pump. They covered it under the optimized vehicle warranty and even waived the $100 deductible. Was aprox $1000 CDN!!! No more misfires or "whine" from the fuel pump or me...

I think the van has about 80000 miles on it. I'm going to talk my dad (who drives the hell out of the van) into buying a replacement for it. The warranty is long been out so we'll have to do it ourselves. They did have electrical problems with the van about 3 months after they purchased it. They were on their way back from a vacation and the van just quit. It wouldn't idle and the guages were going crazy. Luckily, it was under warranty.
