While romping on some dunes the rubber boot was pulled back on the drive shaft letting the grease come out. The shaft was just spinning around inside the joint, a tow truck driver was cool enough to unbolt the front drive shaft so I could drive home.

However when I drive the car it vibrates alot. Park no longer works, I have to use the E-brake and I can't put the car from 4 lo to 4 hi without grinding, I have to turn the engine off and put it into 4 hi. I also noticed a few drops of tranny fluid coming from where the bellhousing bolts to the engine.

I guess I have two question, does anyone know what kind of damage I did? Also I've heard I can't repair the front drive shaft, I have to get a new one... is this true?

Heh, I did something similar in Pismo. Not a good thing my friend. Sounds like you tore up the transfer case.

If I did lose my TC is it possible to replace it with the selec-trac model? If so does anyone what it takes to make that work?

make sure u have the Tranny in Nuetral, and u are at a complete stop b4 changing 4WD mode (4hi to 4lo). u could changee gears going 2-3 mph safely, but I always come to a complete stop and wait about 2 seconds b4 I change gears. I had the same problem that I couldn't shift into low with out having the engine on, and then to shift back up to 4HI I had to have it runnin, then I read the book, and it says to place tranny in nuetral and shift straight back to LO w/out pausing.
so try to come to a complete stop and place the tranny in nuetral wait a second or 2 and then shift straight back to LO, and then straight back to HI. I think that will help.

Yes the NP242 transfer case is a good swap, all u half to really do is swap the front output shaft out of the NP249 (Quadr-Trac) and put it into the NP242. and u will also need to swap the selector shaft and and the bexel for the gears. it is a relatively easy swap for a person who knows their way around a tool box. u could also Call George Kepplein at Transfer Case unlimited, he makes rebuilt NP242 that are an exact bolt on, it comes with everything, for around $1000 (don't know the exact price).

let me know if this works. Joe dksob81@hotmail.com

if you drove without a driveshaft and you have quadra-trac you destroyed the transfer case.
