Help with "Change Oil"

I've just bought a used 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue with app. 70.000 miles on it. The car runs pretty smoothly however I have had one minor problem.

When I turn on the engine the whole dashboard flashes briefly like, I guess, it is supposed to. Yet, the "Change Oil" light stays on for like 30 seconds to a minute, then shuts off.

Now, I know that the last owner had the oil changed around 3 months ago (app. 2400 miles ago), but I'm not sure that she has reset the light.

Even further, I don't know if the light isn't supposed to stay on, like continously, and not go out after like 30 sec. (If it hasn't been reset?)

I have been a bit reluctant driving the thing after I noticed this, and I'm going to get it serviced within this week anyway, but - does this indicate a problem with the oil, or maybe the light? And could someone tell me if the "Change Oil" actually monitors the oil and the quality of the oil, or it just comes on every 3000 miles?

Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

PS. As you probably noticed, I know nothing about cars, so please explain in full details.

I have the exact same problem, do you happen to know where the reset switch is? Im looking for the manual online, i didnt get one with my Intrigue, for some reason, i understand totally dude, same problem The "Change Oil" light comes on then goes off after 30secs. I checked my oil and its fine, i also called a machanic and he said not to worry, just reset the switch, wherver that may be, thats why im looking for the manual. Maybe we can help each other out.

Turn the key to the on position and then depress the gas pedel three times slowly the change oil light will then flash and reset. The computer has it set to turn on the light every 7000 miles. I hope this helps

Like it says, turn key to "ON" position. You then push down on the gas pedal 3 times, as if you were accelerating the car. You will see it flash a couple of times, then it goes away.

Directly from the 1999 Intrigue Owner's manual:

1. With the ignition key turned to the ON position but the engine off,
fully push and release the accelerator pedal slowly three times within five seconds.

If the CHANGE OIL light flashes the system is resetting.

2. Turn the key OFF after the light has finished flashing, then start the vehicle. If the CHANGE OIL light comes back on the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

You probably won't reset it on the first try. The computer is picky and I usually have to try two or three times before I reset the light in my girlfriend's Intrigue.

The CHANGE OIL light is NOT programmed to come on every 7000 miles. The computer constantly analyzes the engine revolutions and engine operating temperature and calculates when the oil needs to be changed based on that. I might also add that it is actually fairly accurate.

Ok i agree up to the point where you say its not programed every 7000 miles, maybe its not set to do that, but i just changed my oil 2 months ago, and i barely drive my car, to school and what not, and my change oil came on and i reset it, ok so it can't be my oil because i checked it, and my oil is fine, so it must be set to go on every so many miles, i called a machanic and he said the same as well, im not trying be a snot or anything im just going by what the machanic told me and what others have said.

The **owner's manual** says that the computer calculates when the light will come on, so it is not possible at all for this to be predetermined at 7000 miles. Once again, it is merely a calculation. The computer does NOT physically monitor the oil's condition at all. It simply calculates when the oil should be changed based on the engine RPM and engine operating temperature. The owner's manual states that this will usually occur every 3000-7500 miles and even sooner depending on your driving habits. Assuming you change the oil when the light comes on and you reset the light every time you change your oil. It can accurately determine when you should change your oil.

You can see the owner's manual for the 2000 Intrigue (same info will apply to your 1999) online at the link below. The part about how the change oil light works can be found on page 315 (of 348) of the PDF file, page 7-6 of the actual manual
