95 Cutlass engine dies on hard brakerwekwert 09-22-2004, 04:02 PM Hello, I have a 95 Cutlass Supreme with 3.1 engine (93k miles) which typically has run great until recently when it began to stall intermitantly. It usually will only stall when I accerate then brake hard. The tach seems to drop real low then the engine shuts off. I could be driving for a half an hour then brake hard and it stalls, other times it is after only a short period of driving but it seems consistant that it happens when I brake hard. After it stalls I simply put it in neutral and restart it and all s fine. The only thing different I have noticed may have been around a while or not but when I start the car after it has been sitting a while there seems to be a puff of smoke. Any suggestions would be helpfull! Thanks in advance! bob rwekwert 09-23-2004, 10:18 AM Just an update and still request for more information: I lied the engine is actually a 3.4 DOHC engine, not 3.1. Last night on the way home the car actually stalled much more often then just on hard stops, it also stalled and ran rough during leaving a stop light and braking, intermittantly. I replaced the PCV, added a cleaner to my gas tank, filled up with Super + gas 93 octane, removed and cleaned the deposits from the ERD valve with gumout cleaner, cleaned the throttle and butterfly with gumout (can you tell I am hoping for a simple air intake problem?) But here is the killer, I replaced the Air filter (which was really acting as an oil filter) this air filter was full of oil, when I pulled out the air filter oil was dripping from it. I am hoping there is not some type of top end oil leak. The car did run great on the way to work this morning with no stalls but I am very concerned about the oil in the air filter. If there are any opinions on the next steps please let me know! If it does, then your torque converter isn't unlocking, causing the car to stall, similar to a stick shift car left in high gear. The plug is on the drivers side of the car, at the front of the transaxle, and is square in shape with 4 wires going to it. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
