2000 Grand Am Inoperatable Turn Signalsbrokerandy25 09-21-2004, 12:25 PM I have a 2000 GA with intermittantly (Sp and English?) inoperatable turnsignsals, I have spent about 2 hrs looking throught the threads in the fourms here and have only found info on 1996 ga's with the same problem. if this has been covered, please let me know. Any way- it is the 4 banger engine, and every now and then, well anymore it is a miracle if they work, the turnsignals will be inoperable. as in nothing, nothing on the dash, no click click click from the turnsignal relay. the hazard button, will sometimes work, when the turn signals do not, about half of the time any way. Use of the fist on the dash and steering column had no effect (possible bad contact fix?) I am getting ready to go out and see if maybe a light is bad, seems that is the first step in diagnosing the problem. Local GM dealer wants $83 to diagnose and 132 for part plus tax and bs. My mechanic thinks it can be done for 200, I would like to do it myself for just the cost of the part. Any Ideas??? Thanks in advance from a resturaunt manager and freelance web developer. andy richtazz 09-21-2004, 02:04 PM your multifunction switch is bad. 96-2001 are similar in design. I've known people to take them out and clean them, and theywork fine afterward. brokerandy25 09-21-2004, 06:08 PM Thanks for the info, could you possibly tell me the basics of getting that part out and replacing it. I was looking at the steering column and for some reason couldn't wrap my brain around getting the shrouds off of the steering column so that I could replace the multifuction switch. workandfish 09-22-2004, 10:17 AM Do not mess with trying to fix this. My wife has a 2000 GA GT that had the same problem. There has been a recall on the switching device. Contact your local dealer first. If you mess with it, they may try to avoid a free repair by claiming it was damaged by your tampering. My $.02. richtazz 09-22-2004, 04:52 PM wasn't aware of the recall Workandfish, good call. I personally would replace the switch without attempting to clean it, but I've seen posts where people have saved themselves money by just cleaning the contacts. By all means Broker, try the dealer first and see if your car is covered under the recall. IF not, the column cover comes off with 4 screws from underneath , and the switch lifts out from the top once the cover is out of the way. brokerandy25 09-22-2004, 11:33 PM Do not mess with trying to fix this. I was at "my" dealer on tuesday, and they tried to charge me $283 or so, to diagnose and fix the problem. can you give me more info on the recall so that maybe I can go to the dealer with some more info and have a place to start with them? workandfish 09-23-2004, 12:48 AM Recall information can be found at the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration website. Look here: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallsearch.cfm The specific hazard/turn signal NHTSA recall number is 03V327000 dated August 23, 2003. GM recall number is 03043. You may want to consider a different dealer if yours tried to charge you for a recalled item. brokerandy25 09-23-2004, 10:10 AM Thanks a bunch, the dealer I went to was just a local GM dealer, so I will give them the benifit of the doubt and call them and see if they are willing to do this, turns out there are a couple of recals, 2 of which apply to me. Thank you to every one who replied to my question. Seems like you saved our broke asses about 300 dollars. Thanks a bunch Andy. jtls67 10-05-2004, 09:08 PM If your signals or hazards don't work period it is likely the recall for 2000 GA's. They replace the hazard switch (which is also the signal flasher) in the center of the dash. if you have the problem with the signals going on randomly that problem is the signal light switch has too much grease on the contacts and if you take it apeart and clean it it works fine. The dealerwanted $400 to replace my switch so i cleaned it and it has been fine for years and cost me nothing. Email me for details on the signal light switch cleaning if you need it.
