hey... im on the forum for a friend... she asked me to fix her car cause it wasnt running for 2 months and i work on most other peoples cars..... well the diagnosis was easy cause after she told me what it was doing it was obviously the alternator.... i pulled the old one off but in doing so i cut the old belt because it was in terrible condition.... now after instaling the new alt im clueless on how to get the new belt back on.... just from looking at it it looks as if you have to pull the motor to get the new belt on but that would be ridiculous.... how do i thread the new belt on around the pullies cause one looks impossible... thanks in advance

If you haven't got the belt back on here's how to do it.

1. Look and see if there is a motor mount in the way of the pulley, if there is put a jack and/or jackstand under the engine to support it and remove the motor mount...carefully.

2. Find the pulley diagram on the strut housing on the left side of the engine bay. Locate the tensioner pulley.

3. Find a socket that fits the nut on the tensioner pulley and get a 1/2 inch drive so you can use the big rachet for leverage.

4. Pull counterclockwise on the rachet and it should move the belt tensioner out of the way enough to slip the new serpentine belt into place. Route the belt like diagrammed on the strut housing.

The socket is an 18 mm

If the belt routing is mising, autozone has an on line manual which may have the routing or a haynes or Chiltons will have it.

christopherhay this is shaggy1571 and i am haveing the same problem with my belt but i figured all you hve to do is remove just the upper motor mount and it should be on the passengers side and slip the belt around it you shouldnt have to remove the motor the worst part is the tenchener so good luck and hope all works out for you

I tried to do this yesterday morning to my 3.1 and it was a no go. I even bought a two ton folding hoist which I ended up taking back. I just took the car to a mechanic and let them install the belt. Even with a gearwrench serpentine belt kit I couldn't reach the tensioner. This is the first time I've surrendered to changing a serpentine belt. Hopefully I won't have to do that again.
