My 88 cherokee 4.0l has a whining noise coming from the fuel pump, which goes away when accelerating. The idle is rough, as it seems to almost stall, and then gets a rush of fuel and rpm go up. It starts OK, fuel consumption seems normal.

I just bought it, so i have no knowlege of it's history.
