93 Deville Coughing

looking at buying a 93 deville with 148,000 on it. the car is beautiful inside, could use some touching up on the outside.
when i drove it, it kept cutting off, and i would have to wind it and hold the pedal to the floor to crank it, then hold my foot on the gas to keep it running, if i let off, it quit again.
does this sound like a major problem, or something that can be easily handled. the check engine light would come on while it was having problems, but when i got back to the car lot, it idled perfect for 10 mins with no problem.
also it was very low on gas when i started it for the first time
