1990 Cutlass Supreme - oil in antifreezeFerni173 09-14-2004, 10:13 AM I searched the internet to find a solution to my problems and I found this super automobile forum, so here I am. I found oil in my antifreeze. I would have assumed that if there was a leak the antifreeze with a higher pressure would flow to the oil, yet the oil looks good. I carred out a a compression test yesterday evening with my bud and the results were 100 psi in all cylinders. No loss in pressure. Has anyone ever has any problems like this for a Cutlass and do you have any suggestions what the problem may be. I went through the first six pages of searches for Oldmsobile threads and didn't find a similar problem. The Spaniard from the True North :smokin: GTP Dad 09-14-2004, 06:55 PM Check the transmission. If you have an automatic you may have a leak in the transmission cooler located inside the radiator. The high pressure of the transmission pump will force the fluid into the radiator. But eventually you will get coolant in the transmission and ruin the tranny. This would look just like oil in the coolant. DIY Mechanic 09-15-2004, 05:12 AM Head Gasket Ferni173 09-15-2004, 01:59 PM GTP DAD The oil in the anti freeze looks darker, The tranny oil is redish. It looks to me like it is oil from the engine. I will need to read my manual to see if I even have a tranny oil cooler. D1Y MECHANIC If it is the head gasket, wouldn't the anti freeze get into the oil compartment instead of vice versa since it is at at a higher pressure at engine running temperature? Thanks for your replies. Fernando 95ragtop 09-15-2004, 04:18 PM I just had the same problem with my '95. It was the lower intake gasket. A notorious problem (not always linked to the new coolant issue). Less than $100 in parts and a weekend in labor. $800 at a shop. Autozone has an excellent manual for the do it yourselfer. (FYI-If you do it your self, you may also want to replace the fuel injector seals while they're out. Also, put oil on the seals when you put the injectors back in.) Good Luck. GTP Dad 09-15-2004, 06:29 PM 95ragtop has experience with a similar problem so I would follow his advise. I do agree with you however, evertime I had a problem the water was the culprit not the oil. You are correct about the tranny fluid being red but when it comes in contact with the coolant it tends to turn darker. I don't think that the head gasket is the culprit because of the fact that the compression is so good. Go with the advise from 95ragtop due toe the fact that he had a similar problem. Ferni173 09-17-2004, 10:12 AM I will be opening her up this Saturday and I will get back to you on the our findings. We will start off with the upper and lower intake gaskets, and go from there. Thanks again for you support! Ferni173 09-28-2004, 09:42 AM It is done! We opened her up and replaced all gaskets and the coolant systems is clean as a whistle (mind you after four to five flushes). Thanks to all, and this could eba good lesson for future car problem enthusiasts. Thanks again to those who responded! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2010, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
