I have a 03 tahoe lt and i have this rattling or loose sound in the front end almost sounds like it is coming from the steering column when I go over bumps or are turning on the highway.
Anyone else have this problem and know what it is?

THANK YOU
NICK

Still under warranty? See your dealer. I had a similar problem... I believe with my 2002 Z71 Tahoe. I felt the bumps and vibration through the steering column... really bad!! I don't drive off road much. So this occurred on the street the worst between 15-30 mph. The GM dealer claimed that the factory did not pack enough grease into the steering gear mechanism. They apparently have a fix for this problem. Now I have no noise what-so-ever. A mechanic familiar with this issue could better describe the fix. I could look up the repair receipt for details if you are interested.

Thank You
I am going to take it to the dealer but I was just curious as to whether or not this was a known problem. It really makes the truck feel like a piece of crap if you know what I mean.

I know this reply is a little late, but I just wanted to add that I had this happen to me on my 2001 Tahoe once already and the dealer packed the column with grease, and now the clunking noise is back. I guess it's going to be a recurring problem, and it's hard to live with because you feel it in the steering whell and it constantly makes the noise while driving.

I've got 40,000 miles after the dealer fixed the steering column rattle on my 01 and it hasn't come back yet

I read in another forum the GM now has come out with a replacement for the old intermediate steering shaft that makes the noise. Supposedly this will be a permanent fix for the noise problem - also, because my Tahoe is now out of warranty, it will cost to get it replaced. When I find out how much, I'll post it here.

Had same problem. I bought the new replacement very short steering shaft from GM...with universal joint. It was easy to replace...maybe 30 minutes including time to look things over closely. Fixed problem...that was 2 years and 80,000 miles ago.

I have an '03 Silverado and I'm experiencing vibration in the steering wheel while traveling approx. 30-40mph and going around a curve. I don't hear any noise.

I brought it to the dealer and they told me that the factory did not pack the mechanism with enough grease. One week later and the problem returned. Now the dealer is going to change my steering shaft once the part comes in. I'll post once the repair has been made.

My truck has only 14K miles and its been in the shop at least 8 times. My previous vehicle was a '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I had for 8 years and it never saw the shop once. I'm thinking about trading this "truck" in for something more dependable.

They didn't tell me the cost of replacing the steering shaft since it is still under warranty. When I bring the truck in, I'll ask how much it would have been.

Called the dealer I like to "deal" with in Houston. Quoted me $115 for the new shaft,...I forgot to get the part number so I could shop around.
However, I complained about my "steering feeling loose" at least 3 times if not more, so I would imagine they have to fix it now, even though I'm out of warranty. Is it worth going through the drama?
Thanks,
Jeb

I have the same problem with my 2002 Tahoe. I had to take it in for this problem back at 20K miles. Noise came back at 40K miles. Now that my vehicle is no longer under warranty, they want to replace the shaft. I was quoted $200 parts and labor. What a joke! I've driven Chevy's all my life, but now I'm seriously thinking about switching. Good luck!

I Have A 99 Silverado And I Got The Shaft Replaced And The Clunk Came Back. The Shaft Didn't Do Anything Except To Stop It For About A Month And A Half. Im Pissed It Cost 250 From The Factory With Installation. Does Anyone Have Any More Ideas?
