Ignition switch, open ignition circuit, no ground, alarm system (if installed).

safety switch,in the gear shift,it is the reason it only starts in park...this can be a problem when a car gets older

The biggest problem is the VATS system. It is the black pellet in the key. Usually the tiny wires that go all the way inside the ignition cyl. break. You should notice the alarm or "security" light on an not going out when this happens. I have worked on more than I care to!
