I have replaced several starters on my 91 Toyota Corolla - 1.9 GFE I believe - and it keeps eating up starters. As an example, the starter will run fine for about 2-3 months. Then, all of a sudden, I'll experience problems where we need to tap the starter to get it to start. I am at my wits end. Other than that, it is a fairly good running car. HELP!!! :banghead:

I am having the same exact problem.. I think it may be the ground wire.. or the engine heating up the starter and locking it... I'm going to try to replace the starter ground wire, and heat wrap the starter.. i'm really lost on this.. I have a 91 prizm (corolla) that's been through 3 in the past year.. and only acts up in the summer months.. i'm stumped but i'll keep posted what happens

Perhaps you have voltage drop at the starter fit a relay in the start wire using battery voltage across the contacts to the solenoid wire

Hi.Had a problem with my starter.Run a jumper wire directly from the battery to the starter solonoid and see if it turns the engine over.If it does, you might have a bad starter relay. There about $60.00 at a auto parts store.I got mine at a bone yard for $4.00 !! Good Luck Diesel 1962 ps.. I have a 1997 Corolla

Check your battery for 3 BUSS FUSIBLE LINKS connecting to the positive side of the battery. Then if you see a burned fuse replace it but if it's not that it could be your altinator, your disributer cap system, your spark plugs, or your ignition wires.

If it's not that then sorry I was no help...

I know its a bit late but saw this thread and had to register. I have an 81 Corolla that had the same problem went through about 5 starters in about 7 months they would all work fine for a bit and then I would have to do the tap to get it going. about the 6th time i gave up and had it brought into a shop maybe I was missing something, wel turned out I was just getting bad starters everything was connected fine grounded and all that it was just the parts I were getting were bad. that is unless the shop fixed something without knowing

lots of bad staters in the world.i had a 1983 subaru .bought a rebulit starter at pep boys .returned it 3 times. pep boys got so disgusted they actually bought a brand new starter fron the dealer and gave it to me. luckily car refused to start while i was at a auto electric shop. the mechanic confirmed that even the brand new starter was in fact a bad one.he rebuilt an old starter he had on the shelf and no more problems.
