I have an 89 camry and the brake light would come on whenever I apply the brake pedal. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Sorry, I meant the brake light indicator on instrumental panel would come on (thanks ishop4less for the correction).
All lights are working. The brake light indicator on instrument panel only come on when braking at speed above 35mph. Now it would come on around 20mph-25mph when braking. Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

i think what akita meant was the brake light on her instrumental panel is on, whenever she apply the brake. Well....i think one of your brake light bulb is burn out, ask someone to take a look in the back while you apply the brake then replace it.

Is it your brake light, or your oil light,because I had the same problem but it was my oil light, turned out to be a blown headgasket ;(

....and if it's not the brake light bulb warning light on the dashboard coming on then maybe it's the brake failure warning light(???). If it is, then check your brake fluid right away. This just happened in my other car and I needed new front brake pads.

Brian, please correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure we've all noticed that whenever you take your car in for service, they always stress that you top up all the fluid levels. Well, in the brake fluid resevoir, I believe there is a sensor that whenever your brake fluid gets down too low it makes an electrical contact and sends you a warning light on the dashboard to get your brakes checked. If you just keep topping it up then you'll never get that warning light and there go your brakes. Make sense??? :smile:

Keeping your brake fluid level full in your master cylinder is a good thing and will keep the warning light from showing. I think I agree with you, but I'm not sure about the "there go your brakes" statement.

Your brake fluid level in the master cylinder will drop as your brakes wear. Don't replace your brakes until the lining is thin. Don't replace them because the fluid level is down, just add brake fluid.

When you push on the brake pedal, drum brakes will cause the level in the master cylinder to drop much more than 4-wheel discs since drum brakes move more than discs and need fluid flow to actuate them. Discs always sit in contact with the rotors, so no significant movement is necessary. If your fluid level is marginal and you press on the brakes with drums in the rear, the fluid level may drop far enough to actuate the low fluid level detector in the master cylinder. Possibly that is what is happening with the author of this thread. Also, the level will change because the fluid shifts to the front with deacceleration, also possibly causing a low fluid indication.

Akita - just add brake fluid to the master cylinder to the full line
