The bright lights wont stay on. I pull the turn signal switch to me and they come on but go out as soon as I release it. I assume this is the bright switch and not a temporary one. Is the switch broken or do you turn the brights on somewhere else? Still havent figured this car out.

Would be helpful if you provided a year...

Most Fords have the Highbeams set so you push the turnsignal forward to turn them on. Pulling it towards you is to "flash to pass".

Sorry... Its an 89 Town Car, the "flash to pass" makes sense, but it wont push forward. Left and right signal ok, got the flash. Just cant turn on brights. I know its an old car but I havent had anything this sweet since my 75 Grand Prix. And this is by far an improvement. Was always a Pontiac man so need to learn a little. This car is a whole new world to me. Havent quite figured out the door buttons yet. Still learning.

Bob,
Look at the main knob that you pull out to turn the lights on. around it there will probably be two dials, one for the automatic head lights and one for the brights. The one on the left controls the automatic head lights and the delay for them to stay on after the car has been shut off. if this feature is on then you won't have to pull the knob to turn on the lights, they should be on (not the brights, just the normal low beams). The dial on the right controls your brights. Your car should have a light sensor behind the rearview mirror (facing the road in front of you) that picks up any bit of light ahead, keeping you from turning the brights on and thus blinding the people ahead of you. What you probably need to do is turn that dial all the way up (toward the "min"). This will keep the light sensor from picking up the light ahead of you.
