Is it possible to rebuild AC compressor?
If it is, how expensive would it be?
If it isn't, how expensive would a new one be?
Where can I get the parts?
Does it pay to rebuild it?

Yes it is if you have the specialized tools required to do the job. If you need a new one purchase one from either an autoparts store and use the old one for the core charge, you can also buy a good used one from a wrecking yard. Both will cost much less and give you far less grief than trying to rebuild the one you have.

Thank you for your helpfull answers. It seems that you have done some work around AC's...

Now I know more about my AC compressor. It seems to be leaking from that spot where the power from the serpentine belt is transfered to the compressor. I guess there is an O-ring that is leaking. Am I right? If I am right, I would like to know how difficult it is to replace?

If your willing to invest the money for all the tools, including a vacuum pump, AC gauges, and proper specialty tools for the compressor rebuilding, then yes, its worth it. But for most your far more likely to just buy remanufactured. Check out www.aircondition.com for more info. I am about to rebuild my compressor on my 96 k1500 truck, but for me I buy tools because I know that I will do the job again, and for payment by someone else. -Chris

Thanks for the help, but I still have some questions.

If I don't have special tools, can I fix a leak on the "clutch end" of a compressor?

Has anyone ever done it?

How bad is it leaking? See some normal oil deposits around this area even with a slow leak. Might give it a recharge and see how it works. I'm assuming it uses R134 refrigerant and this is easy to buy and charge, if it does leak it's not a big pollution deal. Try it and see.

Well, it's leaking pretty much. I have recharged it and it works only for a day. So, the leak is really bad.

Would it be best to just buy a rebuilt/new compressor. Put that in and bring it to a shop for a recharge? Do I need to replace some other parts too???
