Periodic Stalling

Hi everyone...

I have a 1990 Lincoln Town Car Cartier with a problem with stalling. It seems to happen mostly in town, and not on the freeway. Putting the car in neutral seems to help prevent the stall, and the car surges forward once put back into drive.

I have checked the computer, and it reports no errors. The fuel pump and fuel filter have been replaced.

Suggestions?

Does it stall when you come to a stop? Does it remind you of a manual tranny that is left in gear when you brake? If so you might be looking at your torque conversion soilenoid. It fails to unlock when you slow down and the car stays fully in gear when you stop. If you could give a more complete description of the problem, I may be able to help more.

Joedog,
That sounds like a problem I sometimes have with my '88 Town Car. It never stalls when driving, but occasionally when I stop it will die, or when I let off the brake it will jump forward and either idle very low or just die.
If you have any suggestions they would be much appreciated.

Well this could be two problems,

The IAC or the most likely the TFI module.

The IAC is the idle air control valve and does exactly what it name implies. It is on the back of the throttle body (on 302s). Sometimes gunk can accumulate in it and mess up the sensor you can clean it out or get a new one at an autopart store for about $30-50 dollars.

The TFI is the Thick Film Module, it controls the spark out put. here is a link so you can read more about it, click here. (http://www.coolcats.net/tech/troubleshooting/tfi.html) There was recall on this part although it most likely is not honored anymore. And a bad TFI will not trigger a code.

Hey, thank you very much! I'll check out both of those and see if I can pinpoint the problem.
