89 Corsica Won't Start With Key

I have a 1989 Corsica, 2.0L Automatic. When I try to start the car using the key in the ignition, I get nothing. If I turn the switch part way, I get all the lights on the dash etc, but when I turn the lock cylinder to the "start" position, I get nothing. If I put the switch to the "run" position and cross the starter solenoid with a screwdriver, it starts and runs just fine. I am new to this type of car, and my Haynes manual is rather vague in this area. I am not sure if there are any ignition relays or other switches that would stop the 12v signal to get to the starter solenoid. If you suggest neutral safety switch, or a transmission gear selector indicator switch, relay or fuse, please be specific as to their locations in the car. Thanks for looking, and any suggestions.

These things do seem to have alot of problems with the ignition switches. GM made 'em el-cheapo, the swich breaks inside sometimes. You can check it, but you have to pull the steering wheel off. WHich requires a steering wheel puller. Then if you have a tilt wheel you have to get some other special tool to get the lock plate (?(I think thats what its called)) off. If its not tilt you can just pop it right off and viola theres your ignition switch.

Thanks! I will look into that! The tilt wheel unit has the two swivel pins on each side. Both of them are threaded. I wonder if I were to put a screw and washer in those threads, then I could pull those pins out maybe?

Figured it out! The wire going to the starter solenoid was both rusted and loose. Cleaned the terminals and tightened the wire and now it starts just fine!

I hope you put some di-electric grease on the terminal to prevent it from rusting again.
