99 GCL still not consistantly starting when turned overCheryl84944 08-29-2004, 01:46 AM Further to my prev post, the dealership has changed the battery and $175 later the starting problem still exists. It is a 99 GCL and the problem is that when you turn the key in the ignition, sometimes is does nothing, no click, it's as if you haven't turned it far enough. Other times is starts the first time you put the key in and turn it. Tonight, it took 3 times with nothing, then I took the key out and put it back in and then it started normally. Any ideas? DIY Mechanic 08-29-2004, 09:07 AM One thing has been eliminated – the battery. The starting system has only a few parts. The switch, the battery, the starter, the starter relay and/or anti-theft devices and the wires that connect them all. Here are some suggestions: Someone has to look at the starter. Put a blanket down and look under the car at the starter – Is there any corrosion around the cable connections? Have AutoZone or someone like that test the starter, they do that for free. Then go to the ignition switch. Then the starter relay. Look at all of the cables and connections. Check the battery cables. A new battery with bad or loose connections is the same as a bad worn out battery. Get a friend to help you. Someone from work, family, someone. Sounds like you are going at this alone. $175 for a battery is insane. AutoZone installs for free and the most expensive battery should only be $85. If you are dependent solely on the dealer for repairs, then asking for help here does nothing. In general they are honest. The charge rates are high and that is the rub. Have them keep the car for a while. Intermittent problems are the worst. If it is working when the mechanic is trying to fix it then from their point of view – it is not broken. This helps other people with similair problems resolve their issues. Did you try starting it in Neutral? Or wiggling the shifter while cranking as I suggested before? Yes, it didn't make a difference. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
