Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member. Started driving my first Lincoln a week ago. My Cavalier was falling apart and I told a friend to look for a cheap car for me that will pass e-check. He called me at work and said his buddy has this old Lincoln that runs good, bought it sight unseen. He even delivered it. What arrived at my house turned out to be a brown 1989 Licoln Town Car, everything works... Power sunroof, auto headlights, even the clock. No rust, no dents. Runs like new. $500.00, what a deal! I need to fix is passenger side tail pipe. And the brake pedal "pulsates" , goes up and down while braking. Maybe bad rotor? Going from the Cavalier to this big thing took some adjusting, but I love this car!

AWSOME !!
Gas Mileage will suck pretty bad, but the ride is well worth it.
Enjoy !!

No kiddin! Put $5.00 in it and the low fuel light came on the next day. I only drive 1 1/2 miles to work. Another $10 almost got it to a half tank. Well worth it though.

I have a 90, I get an average of about 19.8

And on a full tank I get a travle distance of 312miles not bad for a 4000 pound car

I have a '97 TC, 146,000 miles on it and I am getting about 22 mpg, although that's mostly highway driving. Rides like a dream. Some work that I've had to have done on it over the years:

1. Plastic intake manifold - $ 1,300/ 2003
2. New hoses all around, new battery, cracked overflow tank (cost was mostly maintenance to get to hose under intake manifold)- $800/2004
3. New shocks (replaced originals) - $180/2004
4. Need new ball joints (replace originals, top and bottom each side) - going in end of this month. Expect cost to be around $500

It may sound like a lot, but it really isn't -- especially considering that I need to keep this another 4 years (youngest is freshman at Penn State), and that's all I've had to do over a period of 146k miles. All electrical features still working without any problems. By the way, my tires have 82,000 miles on them and still pass inspection with no problems, so overall maintenance on vehicle is low.

you can do your own ball joints at about $65 -$80 each for parts.

i have a 94tc...get 22.5 to 25 mpg on trips the better 25mpg is when stay under 65 mph

If mpg drops change spark plug wires ... what a difference... the casing at the plug end wears out and shorts to engine block... pull one and you'll see black spots from sparking... on the ones that are bad.

Also changed air suspension bags myself saved about $1000 , buy online.

I've owned many TC's. My 1997 was the worse one. The intake cracked internally and blew the engine. I had a 1988 that went almost 200,000 miles. A nice 1992, a 1995 that got rear ended by a DF Schneider National driver and my 1994 just died with 264,000 miles on it. I NEVER fixed any thing other than brakes on the 1994. The air ride was orginial as far as I know (It had 102,000 on it when I bought it) The trans stopped shifting, and it took some oil when it died. I currently have a 1995 Town Car w 123,000 on it and it runs just fine. Bottom line, these cars are awesone, except for the plastic intake years (1996 and 1997). Five Hundred bucks is a steal. How many miles on it?

That's 1996 to 2001.

I just replaced my manifold, well worth the few $$ to keep this beauty on the road. Just turned 53k miles this afternoon.

The Lincoln service manager at the dealership I go to says that 98 and newer TC's have a metal thermostat housing molded into the intake. 96and 97 models didn't and this is what usually cracked. He says 98 and newer models never have problems with the intakes. Maybe he is wrong. I desided the 95 is the best year. Alumimum intake and classier style. The only way to ride. Hopefully this will last me a few years until I can get a 2004 TC Ultimate. I put 40 to 50k on a year, my 95 will be dead soon enough.

Hello,

The pulsating move you mention in the braking is in the front. It is likely a warped rotor although I know in my '89, I have a cracked brake pad that I need to replace. A warped rotor (that I have read about) happens including the reasons of
1) driving through high enough water with hot brakes.
2) over torqued lug nuts on the wheels.

PS

There is a forum called Lincolnsonline for Lincolns. Lot's of Lincoln talk there.
