Gas Gauge on an '87

Okay, so I bought my TC a while ago and the gas gauge has never worked. It always reads empty and will flash "0 MILES TO EMPTY" on the tripminder every few minutes. The thing is, I was driving it back from a trip a while ago, it had been going for only about an hour and the gas gauge just started working. It read correctly too, according to how much gas I should have had at the moment.

It worked still after sitting in my driveway for 20 minutes, but an hour after that it was back to its old ways and it never has worked since.

I talked to the guy who sold it to me and he said that when it started going out it would work after about 5 minutes of driving, and it just started getting worse and worse from there.

Any ideas on fixing this? I would love to have a gas gauge, because the digital one looks cool as hell, and its also easy to forget where you are on a tank because I have to use the DEST function to determine how much I still have in there.

Thanks.

try droping the gas tank and read the resistances of the sending unit with a meter. its probably the sending unit. dont just replace it measure the resistance with a meter

There's another post somewhere around here regarding this issue. Maybe iit was over at LOL (http://www.lincolnsonline.com)?
Anyway, the cure was to pull the dash unit, clean all the connector contacts with the proper fluid and a pencil eraser.
