About air filter conversion

Hey metros!!
I had asked several shops in here and no one wants to make the air filter conversion for my geo (1996 sedan) because "it is not fully injected and then the air filter won't work". I know this is crap because every car in the world (as far as I know) uses air filter. The thing is.. are they laying about that just because this conversion represents a lot more of work to do or are they telling me the truth about performance?

Thanks a lot ppl,

Well, when you build a structure over the top of the manifold to do that conversion, you create a vacuum chamber. It will provide a nice buffer at high RPM to provide for more air. Try to make it as big as possible, but smooth on the inside, with a tapered opening going from the intake pipe to the new "manifold" you'll build for it. It won't do a whole lot, but You'll notice some decent mid-range power, and more vacuum, so your brakes will probably work better.

Thanks for the explanation metrobrother.

One more question: If I create a vacuum chamber as air buffer for high RPMs, that means I will increase my MPG when I am speeding a bit? Besides, the air filter supposily adds a little extra power to the engine plus some combustible economy, isn't it? Maybe I am missunderstanding this filter conversion.

Thanks again Geozukigti.

Well, if you're just looking for a better filter, K&N makes a drop-in filter for your car. It'd be a LOT easier :)

Naa Geo, I am looking for fancy power improvement hopping not to affect my fuel economy. Is that possible? I read before the 2+ degrees for timing belt, i didn't know that one.

Not timing belt, your ignition timing. It will fire closer to TDC, and produce a few extra HP, be careful, advance it too much, and you'll "PING" and hurt your motor.

Ahh.. haha.. dumb me.. The ignition timing is already 2+ degrees, I did not it was a regular practice.. :D

What about the power improvement vs. fuel economy?

I meant another +2deg :-P (+4deg) Well, the power an engine develops is based on how efficient it is. You can improve efficency with better air/exhaust flow, hotter spark, better timed spark, cam timing, and fuel flow. Unfortunately, when you improve air flow, you also add fuel usage to maintain fuel/air ratio. But when you get those up, you get more power. A nice upgrade for a better high end would be swift GT fuel pump, better air filter, race cam/advanced timing cam sprocket. If you're seriously interested in the cam, let me know. I'll inquire if he's got any in stock, or if he'll just modify your cam and cam gear.

Geo:
I forgot about this post.. Sorry  The thing is that I am in Costa Rica, so it would be a little difficult (not saying expensive, even when it is :D) to have the parts from your friend. I will try the +4 degree over timing to see what happen. Besides, I am seriously thinking into set the fancy air filter conversion to give the engine a cooler look.

Thanks anyway pal, tell you in a while how was it.
