Wow .... what a day.
There were only Fabio and I battling it out for honors in SM2.
We both left Day 1 with best wet conditions times of 149 seconds.

The record for SM2, set by Fabio last year, was 132.8 sec.
We got three runs in today and it was day of me throwing out rights and Fabio countering with left/right combinations that left Hyde beat up by running :D

Round 1 ding, ding
I decided to attack the hill today and I went all out as much as I felt comfortable for my first real pass:

134 seconds. ;) .... within 1.2 seconds of the hill record.
Fabio met me at the top of the hill with an inspiring 131! ... new hill record.

Round 2 ding, ding
One of the big spots I lacked courage, I decided to commit a bit more throttle to it and I reaped the benefits: 132.2 beating Fabio's previous hill record.
Fabio, in his typical style attacked the hill like the veteran driver he is and banged out a 129.02 second pass!!

To give some perspective, only 13 people in history have done Duryea in under 120 (2 minutes).

Round 3 ding, ding
I made a few decisions on this run:
1. I was going to take turn 3 casual. Up to this point, I kept throwing the rear end out there because it was (a) fun, (b) major spectator area and (c) my head was up my butt about getting the best time possible!

2. I was going to go faster through turn 6 (fondly known as "oh crap" ~ where Fabio, and many others, have lost there cars in the past).

3. I was going to keep my foot in it longer and harder at the top of the hill going across the ridge (long pseudo-straightway)

When I shut the car down up top, that was the first time I have scared myself with my own driving in quite a while.
I was physcially shaking ... scarry stuff. I have in car video that I will be uploading at some point.

Hyde was skipping across the top of the ridge like a stone across water and this was all well above 100 mph.

I thought maybe ... just maybe I might have graced the 130 range.
To my pleasure I actually managed a 129.4 sec pass!!
Absolutely amazing.

Fabio ... man this guy ... his tires ... his experience ... his kahoonas .... he banged out a 127.9!!!!!!!!!

1st place and new hill record for SM2!

Next week I am back to the drag strip for a NOPI double-header at ATCO Raceway in NJ. Hyde just keeps tickin', even after Fabio gives him a serious lickin'.

VIDEO COMING SOON ~ by Monday morning at the latest

Other results:
There were 108 drivers.
Raw times: Fabio was #11, I was #12
The only other faster street car was a Porsche 996 that ran a blistering 126.5!

The other 10 cars were open wheel race cars.
There wer several open wheel race cars that Fabio & I beat bad :evillaugh

Other MR2s:
145.707 Alvey Ford (72 years old in a 88 SC!)
151.576 Dan Ryne 88 MR2 NA
182.742 Trudy Robertson (in Dan's car) 88 MR2 NA
142.136 Glann Hoffman in an ITA MK1

FTD: 116.460 a GT2 car dreiven by Merlin Miller.

Now since you beat his old record all you need is a flux capacitor and beat him last year. I have a slighty used capacitor if your interested. I've only used it once or twice to get future info on sports scores for my bets.

BTW who is Fabio. The way you are talking about him sounds like he is famous. Should I have heard of him?

Fabio was hit by a bird while on the descent of the Apollo's Chariot roller coaster at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Fabio is more know for these types of images... ones of less self-pwnage.

Although, I admit... a small part of me wishes it was.

What'd be better than seeing a sexy guy with long hair driving a MR2 with an open top?...

Video below ...

Fabio is a good friend of mine and fellow MR2 enthusiast.
I copy/pasted my "big post" from the MR2 board where he is known ... sorry for tke lack of explanation above.

If you go to my Site, and go to Updates and look down the page for Fabio, you will see a page of him and his 2 MR2s.
He has the hill record for most of the hill climbs in the series.
There is an in-car video of him rolling his MR2 @ 110 mph during a hillclimb on that page!! (this video is not a big download)
That was 3 years ago and he walked away Without a scratch.

MY IN-CAR VIDEO
WARNING ~ 19 MEG DOWNLOAD
It is the whole 2 minute, 9 second run.
On dial up, it may take close to 2 hours to download.

redneck, u kill me sometimes.

nice runs. cant wait for the vid to DL. were those runs with your new IM in? i know you are still waiting on the wheels/tires.

why dont you challenge fabio to a drag race and absolutely kill him?

JekylandHyde
08-23-2004, 04:26 PM
That was with the intake manifold.

Fabio is a great friend. You have to realize he has been racing on that hill for 5 seasons now.
This is my first time. I can't explain the challenge of racing on a road at 110 mph+ that is not straight.

Also, he was on sticky autocross tires.
I was on my normal street tires.
It was a fair fight (expereince & tires against HP) and he won.

I have drag raced him many times.
He has a white 93T MR2 and a yellow 91T MR2.
Here is a photo of me drag racing his white 91T.
The blue you see behind my car on the ground is the 60' line :D

IIRC, I ran 12.2 and he went 14.2

lol ... "for a first time" ... I beat the hill record for my class by 3.5 seconds. I think that is good for anytime ;)

Serisously, I'll get better tires and analyze the hell out of that video and next year will be very different.

vid was so worth the D/L thanks for posting it great run too man!
Thanks!

Is he still on the old tires you sold to him?

JekylandHyde

He is on the same brand of tire I sold him.
I believe he has since replaced two of them.

that was awesome sir!

you race with your t tops open? does that take away your chassis stiffnes at alll?

that car has great turn in, I notice it seems like you try to gun it to early with the line your taking, I would try to feed it some more power earlier and ride out the racing line more to the edge of the road with a little less steering effort and trying to keep the rear end planted. it just seems like you cut some of those corners too hard and lost a lot of traction comming out of the turn.

what do I know though, i've never driven your car.. but thats my critical analysis of it. looks like you need some better brakes perhaps.. looks like you took it easy comming into a few corners... tires? saving the brakes? rough road?

that was some good driving though lol, I loved how the rear end slipped out a lil on the top of the hill, thats one of those moves you just do instinctively without thinking and that takes balls to do running it that hard on a hill climb.

SR20DETpower, thanks for the critique and feedback.
To answer a few of your questions:

1. You are not allowed to have the T-tops in during a hill climb.
They want to limit glass during an accident especially glass under flex like a T-top. I do not lose any rigidty since I have a 6-point rol lbar in my car. I assure you my car is plenty stiff.

2. I agree on cutting the corners a bit hard and losing some grip. My intent was to allow room for the rear to step out if need be. My "lines" were a little conservative, but (a) this was my first time (b) my priority was driving teh car home :D

3. I have wonderful brakes. The corners you saw me coming into "slow" I was screwed on gearing. If you watch again, you might catch that I fully wind out 2nd gear a few feet before those turns. It is an awful choice between cruising in 2nd OR grabbing 3rd to only have to downshift right away again.

4. I've been racing/driving MR2s for 10 years, the rearend stepping barely makes me flinch any more. To be honest, the moment you are refering to I forgot about until I saw the tape. From the crest after that point on I am in 4th gear full boost and the car is skating across the road ... THAT was unnerving and that is what got my adrenaline going.
So much so that I forgot about that stepping out point ;)

Thanks again for the critique.

Is that a fire suit Jeff?

JekylandHyde
08-25-2004, 09:56 PM
Yes, to do the hill you need:

Either a 2 layer fire suit OR a single layer with nomex underwear.

You also need nomex socks, fire proof gloves and shoes and a helmet.
If you have facial hair you need a nomex sock for your face (forget the name of those)

You also need a roll cage that meets SCCA specs and a fire extinguisher with metal nozzles/brackets/handles.

.... one last thing, if you have at -top car, you need arm restraints as well.

JekylandHyde, this maybe a stupid question, but ATS whats it stand for, because there is an ATS Performance shop here where I live, and I wanted to know if that has some type of connection.

JekylandHyde
08-26-2004, 06:56 AM
If you click my siggy photo you will go to ATS racing's site. They are in Texas.

ATS is threee guys names.
Aaron and Scott ... I am not sure of the 3rd guys name.

SR20DETpower
08-26-2004, 08:10 AM
yeah I guess I never thought about the T tops that way/didn't see your roll cage in vid.

yeah I did notice you topped out a few seconds before a couple corners and were just kinda stuck at that speed... not too much you can do about that I suppose.

I don't know much about the mr2 transmission, do they have a selection of final gear ratios you can choose from, is yours stock? A lower ratio might actually help you out with the turbo boosting away, you had no problem winding out the lower gears on your current setup. Everyone is always talking about higher gearing for racing, I kind of like a little bit lower one to broaden the speeds i can reach in a gear.

what a good day that must have been man, that looked like a lot of fun LOL, we have nothing like that down here in South East Florida.

JekylandHyde
08-26-2004, 10:45 AM
Yeah, my tranny is 100% OEM.

I only know of one alternate gear set for the MR2 and you have to order from Japan ($$$$).
The easiest way to change gearing in our cars is to alter your over all tire + rim diameter.

SR20DETpower
08-27-2004, 01:40 PM
I've seen a company that makes dog cut gear sets starting at 7 grand LOL.... thats just rediculous, Im talking about the final gear though, the one connected with the differential. This a lot easier then changing out the entire gear set. I've never had a 5spd mr2 come to the shop before so I don't know much about their transmission. Do any other cars share that transmission? is the AW11 or sw20 N/A transmissions the same? Do they have different final drive ratios?

that could be worth looking into next time you have the transmission pulled.

JekylandHyde
08-27-2004, 02:16 PM
AW11's are entirely different.

The 5SFE (the NAs) bolt up to the 3SGTE engine, but I am not sure about individual gears.
I know the trannies were designed for entirely different power bands.
