Hard to turn after driving interstate

95 Grand Cherokee turns with great resistance after driving on the interstate for 30-40 minutes at 65 mph+. Feels like it's almost jumping into a parking space that requires a hard left or right turn. Problem disappears after car sits for a while. Had 4 x 4 and transfer case checked amd transfer case fluid changed. CV joints were checked. Axle nuts were loose and were retorqued. Drove okay for a few days then problem came back. By the time I get it to the shop, the problem is gone. Anybody had this problem? What do I tell my mechanic to look for?

being that it is a 95, has it had the viscous coupler changed? sounds like a strong possibility.

Another question- are all the tire sizes on the vehicle the same size and are any low on inflation.

If one of the tires are different radius, it will cause the viscous coupler will work like it is supposed to when you get stuck only it will happen the whole time you are driving down the freeway.

As soon as you stop, the coupler cools down and works like normal.

hope this helps some

I know exactly what you're talking about. I bought a 95 JGC -2 weeks ago and I've had the same thing happen. One of the threads that I started ("If it's not the brakes then what is it?") is on the 2nd page or so in this forum. There's a similar thread with a title of something like "Tight turns."

The VC seems to be what most people suspect.

Guess this is a pretty common problem, huh? I haven't had anything done about it yet, but I want to talk with a mechanic when I take it in (hopefully this coming week) for some undone recall work.

How long have you owned it?

Thanks for the replies. I have owned my 95 JGC 4 years. Overall, few problems.
I will check out the viscous coupling since others seem to have the "hopping into parking space" problem. It makes sense. After driving on the interstate with little or no turning, it overheats and locks up. Cools down, problem goes away.
The tire pressure idea also makes sense. That would cause unnessary strain on the vc and could be the reason it only happened occasionally in the past. LIke many, the only time my tire pressure gets checked is when I get the oil changed.
It's paid for, so I always figured I'd be making a car payment or paying a mechanic for something. Looks like the parts man and the mechanic get my $$ this month.
Thanks, again.

I have a 95 GC aswell, and had the same problem, the transfer case oil in those things are too viscous. Try using thicker oil in the transfer case, I did and since I've done that the problem has laid dormant.
