Can anyone tell me what the cost of installing a muffler, tailpipe, and exhaust pipe on a Taurus cost?

The local Farm Fleet said it would be about $360 installed. Never had one done before so the quote was a shock - especially when I see ads for mufflers cost about $100. Is this price legit/fair?

Also are all mufflers and pipes stainless or do I specifically have to request stainless?

Sorry if this has been asked before but the search function here wasn't working for me. If this should be posted elsewhere let me know. Thanks.

That price is probably not to terribly bad if you're having the whole thing replaced. You didn't say if it is a four or a six cylinder engine. Usually those exhaust systems will outlast the vehicle body. I've got 175K miles on my '94 and still no problem there or anywhere else, really. If the one your looking at it is stainless steel, then I'd say it is a bargain.

Fugacity,
You didn't mention if this includes the catalytic converter, is the most expensive component..?.. A good comparison is to check with a Ford dealer. Let your fingers do the walking and call around for quotes.

4cyl Taurus? That would have been an 87 or 88 Taurus only.

Does the whole exhaust really need replacing? If you just replace the muffler, and you go with a generic one, it should run $30-40 for the muffler and $40 max to weld it in. $360 is not too bad a price for the entire cat-back (exhaust pipe starting at the y-pipe under the front of the cabin, running to the muffler, then out the back), but if you shop around, you can do much better. At a local one-store muffler shop I had a custom exhaust put in for that price sans the mufflers. They used 2.5" 409 stainless from the y-pipe to the muffler, welded up a flex pipe and two resonators, welded in the muffler and custom exhaust hanger mounts, and ran dual 2.25" 304 stainless pipes out the back (2.5ft long each). They told me they could do a regular galvanized steel exhaust including mufflers and resonators for $250.

By gosh you may be mostly correct. Haynes does list specs for an '86 though. They do not say what engine was offered from when to when. The only hint they give that the 4 was offered from '86 to '88 is that they only go up to '88 with the manual transaxle lubricant. I preffered the older manuals with the charts that listed the year and all the engines available and most of the pertinent specs. Not being in the "business" I have limited information and therefore may slip up now and again but not intentionally. Thanks for the heads up. I don't know why they ever offered the 4 in the Taurus to begin with. Tryed one once and didn't care for it one bit.
