Hi,

I just got back from a service call for my business, and my Jeep's console is displaying "Rear Lamp Failure" and it appears my tailights are now out. They were working fine just 15 minutes ago, and now their out. Any idea what the problem is?

Are you absolutely positive that your taillights ARE out? Reason I'm asking is that the "rear lamp failure" message seems to be one of the traditional quirks with this vehicle. I just bought my first jeep (a 95 JGC Laredo) on Tuesday and the message was coming up when I bought it. I searched here and it's been discussed a few times, and there's currently an active thread about this.

If your lights ARE out, I have no idea what to tell you!

Hi,
its probably the NSS (neutral safety switch) from the transmission. they tend to get dirty. if you have a Haynes manual they show how to get to it and dissasemble it for cleaning. Im not sure what year your Jeep is but here is the remedy for an AW4 tranny http://jeepin.com/features/nss/ . I also have the same problem, just waiting for a day off to do it.

Quick question to artrageous, you said that there was an active thread about the Rear lamp Failure issue, where is it and could you set up a link. This actually happened to me today for the 1st time, both of my lights, brake and rear tailights are fully operational, I thought it was a fuse issue, but I have had no luck, and it is a general annoyance in an otherwise, very pleasant experiance. Thanks alot...

Alstott--the active thread was from a year ago but I'm sure you can do a search to find it. I've still got the display flashing and it's annoying but I haven't done anything about it. Apparently it can be caused by the wrong types of bulbs being installed (something that's pretty easily fixable, I guess) or a wiring problem. You might want to start a new thread to see if anyone else has any suggestions. Best of luck!

The rear lamp failure pertains to all the lights (Tail, side markers, back-up, high mount stop lights, license plate) in the rear. Go over each light (easier to see at night, Have some one hit the brakes, check both brake lights and the high mount stop light (there are 2 sometimes 3 bulbs in here) look very closely at the high mount b/c it was hard for me to detect a blown bulb here, check to make sure both license plate bulbs are operational, make sure tail llights are working, and turn signal bulbs.

Just go over each bulb carefully, I am sure you will find you problem.

I also had this prob for some time before someone here told me to check the highmount "thats the one in the rear window" it has 3 bulbs in it and on mine the center bulb was out! looked normal to but after finding it was the prob I was sold on automotive forums.

Thanks to all the pros here who help dummys lime me!

That problem happened to me for about a year even though none of my lights were out. Someone told me that if you put non Jeep lights in as replacements that sometimes causes the computer to say rear lamp failure. The problem finally went away completely, although I'm not sure if it was from some amazing mechanic finding a hidden bulb that was out, or if another bulb was replaced that was causing the computer to freak out...
