I started having issue with overdrive comming on by itself and then off while driving , then noticed that we I when to engage the over drive on my 93 JGC lmt it wouldn't work and then by jeep was sluggish in drive, took to Jeep repair shop and they told me it was my tranducer or solinoid relay with in transmission. this didn't fix before I took to jeep I took it to a transmision specialist they replace those parts that jeep suggested I replace, Jeep was just going by what there manual told them. 3 more time i took back to jeep to diagnose and 3 more times they keep telling me it my transmission but the trans mission specialist adivsed me that its an electrical issue with my overdrive that is some how stopping the signal to automanticlly switch the gear when in drive. I have to switch between 2nd and drive which only gets me to gear 3 so I am running on gear 2 and 3 for the last month and am frunstrated that not even jeep them selves know how to dianose the issue of my over drive button no working, but it does flash once the ignition start but then doesn't respond to any manual command ( pushing button) Help has any one had this issue.

is it a 4.0 or 5.2?start by checking all of the fuses.it sounds like a 4.0 with a 42re trans.basically it has an electronic governor instead of a mechanical one so if ther is an electrical problem it sticks in third gear

I had a similar problem, I lost first overdrive and then the rest. I rebuilt the trans and it happen again. So I took it to a shop and the tried. After five times they found a tech bulletin that mention a check valve in the line and the oil cooler need to be change. They installed a in line filter and a new cooler and solved that problem.
