The problem is that the car runs fine but sometimes when you shut it off it won't start again. Wait a couple of hours and it may start. We have taken it to the local shop, when running but they can't seem to pull any errors codes out. We did replace some module located on the distributor cap that tested out poorly but didn't help the starting problem.

Once I attempted to start it with a squirt of ether just to see what would happen but it didn't help which makes me think its not a fuel problem. Didn't sputter or anything.

Suggestions!!!

What they replaced on your vehicle, kawdude, was probably the TFI (Thick Film Integrated) module on the distributor itself, not the cap. Did the mech clean the surface and then coat with a dielectric grease before installing new? Could well be your problem, mede. May want to try a new coil too. They will go haywire after warming up. Just a couple of things to check.

I'll verify the grease. When they test the module they said it was weak but not failing. Is the coil located on or by the distrib cap?

Is the coil located on or by the distrib cap?

On my '94 it is directly in front of the distributor, just to the left (cars left) of the front valve cover. If it isn't there, just follow the wire from the center of the distributor cap to it. Good luck.

I was/am having a similar problem with my '97. First, the battery was dying all the time(I have a nice stereo though). I ended up replacing the battery and un-hooking the stereo. Right around that time is when it started to not start on occasions. You'd turn the key and nothing would happen. Not one noise. Then, I'd go to try starting it again and it'd start basically fine. It took anywhere between 1/2 hour and a couple days for it to start up again.
My mother and sister took it out a couple weeks ago and at their last stop, the car totally died on them. I called AAA for them and they sent a guy over to see if he could start the car. He had my mother try starting the car while he was tapping on the starter and the car started turning over somewhat, but still wouldn't start. So, this guy said that it was a bad starter for sure and called the tow truck.

Now, I have no idea what this guy's mechanical knowledge is, but I'd guess the same thing.

Does that whole hitting the starter thing mean that the starter's bad for sure? Is that the first place I should start?(meaning take it off and have it tested) The negitive battery terminal also builds up corrosion pretty fast. That has been going on for a long while though, and I alwas clean it. It's clean now. I don't know why it corrodes so fast.

If anyone has any suggestions on what to do next, or a guess at the problem/s, or anything else that could help please let me know. I am on a very limited budget, so the repair shop is out of the question.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any help. Sorry I couldn't help you kawdude. Good luck with everything.

-Mike
