Have a 96 GC 5.2 with 249 transfer case.I found a 94 249 but have heard they changed in 95. Would the 94 work or do I have to use one 95 and latter?
Thanks for any help.

The 94 TC will bolt right in but the difference is in the viscous coupler. Check out the comment in this thread

I take it that maybe the VC in the 95 TC is gone as well. Is that right??

It should bolt up. Unfortunately your replacement is from 94 so it won't have the advantage of full lock-up when in 4Lo. But I think the only difference is in the cut of the gears inside which won't be a concern as long as you swap the whole case in without interchanging input/output shafts. I'd be tempted to do the 242 swap if the VC crapped out. Here's a nice how-to http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=694 But if you already have the 249 I guess just swap it when the VC goes bad.

Thanks for the Help! The 242 seems like the way to go.

One thing to keep in mind is the transmission from the donor vehicle. Many people seem to overlook this. If it has the Aisin Warner and you don't for example you will have to swap the input on the transfer case. Also look for the shift linkage bezel so your indicator will read correctly.

the vc in the 94 is the piece of junk.96 and up are less prone to problems.I work at a jeep dealer and never replaced a 96 and up.95 and down are always being replaced
