2001 S-10 Blazer Instrument Cluster

I have problem with my 2001 S-10 Blazer. When the key is turned on, about half of the dash warning lights (ABS, Airbag, seatbelt etc.) do not light up, the fuel gage does not work, the PRNDL does not light up, the temp gage does not work. About all that does work is the Volt meter, Oil pressure gage, the tach and speedo. But when you turn the Key off, the PRNDL lights up. I have consulted local Speedo shops and it appears to be the instrument cluster, they all seem to be a little reluctant to agree. Any Help?

We checked the fuse panel and found nothing. Are there fuses somewhere else, under the hood perhaps? If so, where?

I tried replacing the original instrument cluster with a new (rebuilt) instrument cluster but I had the exact same symptoms. Now I am really stumped. I have checked all of the fuses in the fuse panel on the side of the dash board and also the fuse box under the hood. This can't be a new problem, anyone have any ideas? I'm desperate. I was told there may be a sensor that has gone bad, but the Dealer wants $80 just to look at it.

Don't go to a dealer, go to a mechanic.

Like I said, I am stumped. Someone out there must have seen this before. I am open to suggestions. It has to be something rather simple. I mean what affects the fuel gage, temp gage, and the lights. I checked every fuse I could find with an Ohm Meter and everything checked good.

Well the mystery is over. It turns out that the culprit was a bad ignition switch. Once that was fixed, the gauges and lights all started working again.

I have a service bulletin number that I am told describes the issue. See Bulletin No. 01-07-30-002C. According to my daughter's Boyfriend, there was a bad solder joint in the ignition switch, which was re-soldered and this fixed the problem. I did not witness this, so my advice would be to simply replace the ignition switch.

I appreciate the info. Do you know where (on the net preferably) I can find detailed instructions on the removal and replacement of the ignition switch? My Haynes book (surprisingly) doesn't speak on it. Also, how much did the new part cost?

Do a search on this forum for ignition switch. I tried for 2 nights in a row but thanks to this stinking dial-up I get booted out. There was a thread not to long ago that basically described a step by step instruction on how to R&R the ignition switch. Try GMpartsdirect.com for the part, I think they run about $85 USD.

Blazee, help me out here. Do you remember the thread? I can't remember who posted it.
