falling headliner, know a good glue brand to use

I have a 91 firebird formula w/ the third generation body style and the headliner is starting to come off the foam backing ( a common problem from what I've heard). Any suggestion on a brand of glue to use or instructions on how to do it would be helpful( I don't just want to use tacks). O I live in Minnesota so the temps can go from 60 below to about 120-130 so it has to be able to deal with temperature extremes. any help would be great!

You might want to consider pulling your headliner panel out and put a headliner kit on it.

The material is starting to fall because the foam on the backside is starting to deteriorate. In order for the glue to adhere, you have to clean the dry rotted foam off the panel. If you do that, then the next problem you might face is reglueing the material back to the panel. Without the foam backing, the headliner material is so thin the glue will bleed thru it.

Just wanted to give you a heads up on that. I have been replacing headliners for over 20 years in South GA and have seen alot of those headliners like that.

I have not done it yet what i was planning on doing was scrapping off the old dried up glue off of the headliner material as well as the foam backing with steel whole or a brush or something, would this work or no? I am redoing about a third of the headliner, the rest of it has stayed fine, I gave the headliner enough time now to dip to where I think the glue will hold since it is holding up excess fabric weight along the edges now. Do you think this would hold for at least a year? I would also be scraping off any shady looking foam itself and hopefully it wont get very wavy. any other suggestions would be apreciated. What Kind of places do you go to to get a headliner done if you weren't comfortable doing it yourself?

I use a stiff nylon brush, a steel brush could damage your panel.

Your front edge might would hold, but its the back half you need to be concerned with. The life expectancy of a headliner is 10-12 years depending upon the climate in your area

Your local automotive trim and upholstery shop would be where to go, Call them and ask for a quote.

I normally charge $85 for the headliner, $25 for the side panels that
cover rear speakers if your year model has them.

I think I'll try to fix it, hell i'm only out the 11 bucks that I have allready spent on the adhesive. thanks for the help. If it dont look decent then I'll get it totally redone. Any suggestions on how to make the foam smooth after I scrape off the shady lookin stuff.

I am not sure about your car but if it does not turn out nice you can get a fiberglass headliner for pretty cheap ~150 (thats the price for an eclipse anyways) Might want to look into it

any spray on adhisive would work

what I would do it get the liner out of the car and rip the old liner off then reapolster the foam that holds it on. like they said a wire brush would help too.

Sorry but not any spray on adhisive will work. Use one with a rubber base and you will be doing it again after a hot day.
