My 1996 Camry used to get 470 miles to the tank. Now it gets 350. Three mechanics have not been able to identify the problem. The engine light has been on for 1 year. Other than that, the car drives well. Any one have any ideas?

What code is causing the engine light to come on? Have someone check it.

If those mechanics are not telling you what the engine checklight code is, they are either not taking you serious as a customer or they are not qualified to work on your car. I have a 96 and have two engine check code errors, a 301 bad injector and a 401 bad vsv valve. I found through experience not to waste your time with cheap inexperienced mechanics. Make sure your mechanic is experienced with Toyota engines, don't go to the local pep boys or gas station.

Those OBD II check engine codes are kind of generic. The same codes apply to many cars. Here is a list
http://www.obdii.com/codes.html
more here
http://www.troublecodes.net/Toyota/

I have found if you have your code number just type that in google like P0401 OBD II check engine code and you can find information about that particular code.

'92-'95 Camrys are OBD I.

I use the list from the Haynes manual.
