Rear axles

I came across a 1988 Ram 150 ½ ton van recently with a shot 10 bolt 8 3/8 rear. I was told the rear was replaced twice. I’d like to know if a 9 1/4 rear could be fitted fairly easily without heavy modifications.

Links, experience or any relevant information on the subject would be appreciated.

You might want to check into things like the drive shaft length, spring purches locations, brake backing plate interchangability, brake line connections, and shock mounts.

I heard there were 9 1/4 rears used in 88 vans. I was kind of hoping someone here had replaced their 8 3/8with a 9 ¼. From what I read the 8 3/8 is 27 spline and the 9 is 31. . I believe that is correct? I know from appearances the gear housing between the two is completely different. Most important for me are the mount locations. I don’t have the facility at this time to relocate mounts or replace parts opening the housing. I figure the easiest solution would be a direct swap, possibly changing the yoke if needed.

DO you have a line on a good used 9 1/4? You can probably find one at a junk yard, you might need to find a B200 or B250 to get on. If you do, see if you can get the drive shaft, too.

I believe at this time I will have to rely on measurements locating a replacement rear at a yard in the hopes I can fit one from a heavier duty van. It has becoming somewhat difficult to find information in text form regarding replacement as I have mentioned.
