will not start

I removed and replaced my radiator to change the water pump. When all done and I connected the battery the headlights started to flash. We unlocked the driver door with the key and it started, however the fan shroud was too close and scraping so we shut it down adjusted the shroud and now it will not start even if I disconnect the battery and then go through the flashing headlight thing. Any clues?

Yes I've done that several times as well as the tailgate. It's a 95 grand cherokee. I only disconnected two connector to the air compressor and that shouldn't have anythin to do with it. Seems like it's the security system. Any way to reset it?

Where is it located and could I have damaged it when replacing the water pump by putting the long bolt in the wrong hole

What do you mean it won't start? Does it crank?

Okay here's the deal. I managed to break the timing ear behind the water pump when I put the wrong bolt in. I have replaced the timing gear. I align the timing marks dot to dot crank on top cam on botttom. Stiill doesn't start. I pull the gear off, rotate the crANK 360 AND REINSTALL THE timing gear. still will not start. What the?

I believe that the cam gear is indexed to the camshaft and the crank gear is indexd to the crank so it shouldn't matter which rotation you install the chain on.

If you are one turn out on the crankshaft though, you will be a half turn out on the firing order.

BUT you tried it both positions and no change SO.......

one of the sensors might be bad (try for codes) maybe a bad connection OR.....

maybe the valves hit the head and some are bent (bad news I know) when the engine first ran and maybe skiped a couple of teeth on the gear. I'm not sure if your engine is an interference engine or not but I suspect it might be. Do a compression test or a cylinder leak down test to confirm this either way.

You still have not specified, is the engine cranking or not? If it is cranking then I agree a compression test is next in line.

Yes it definately turns over. I've worked on a few engines before and those suckers will run on four cylinders. I guess I'll have to do the compression test.

Okay I found the problem why it wouldn't start after I bought the manual and started trouble shooting. The jabroni that diagnosed the timing gear never connected the coil wire. Hard to see way in the back.

Now for the bad news. It starts but runs like crap. I probably damaged some valves. Now a freakin valve job. Would it be easier to just put a recycled engine in than disassemble the intake and heads while the engine is in the car?

A compression test will reveal if that's your problem

If it was mine, I would just do the valve job - after doing a compression test to double check the source of the rough running.

That's assuming that the engine was running fine before the timing gear/chain problem.

When you get the head off, look closely at the piston tops to see where the valves hit and made a mark in the carbon. There shouldn't be any damage to the piston. If there is a mark in the metal, smooth it out with emery cloth.

If after you do a compression test and it reveals low or no compression in a cylinder, a leak down test should be done to identify where the leak is.
